Correct. in my time only 5% of school leavers went to University. If you cannot even pass english and maths GCSE then you need to back to school and master these subjucts .. or not ?

Both of these women look so hot that I can fit them into my spa after work on Friday afternoon. And its BYO only.

It's a bums on seats money spinner for universities, hence the lowering of the bar for educational acceptance levels.

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

Of course they should be banned until they pass it. Let them all in and there is no value to a degree.

This is not a 'punishment' it is a measure to make sure that young people applying for a place at university have the required standards in literacy and numeracy.

I do agree that there should be fewer, high quality degrees with more decent apprenticeships. However, I'm not keen on writing people off even younger. I would have a more rigorous process at the point of entry. Likely to be the same kids who don't make it through, but at least you gave them a shot.

University is a giant con. I did 2 years of a 3yr BA course. Not through choice. Wouldn't fund my last year but they'd already paid the university for my final term, so I couldn't afford to go but I still owed them for the last year's that I couldn't attend. And to be honest as a mature student I learned nothing in the years attended. It was all about ticking boxes so the university could recruit more people into the con.

Getting into university used to be merit based, what was wrong with that ? Not everybody needs or wants to go to university. Seems to me that a lot of the new degrees are just made up.

Its not about Mickey Mouse degrees its about Mickey Mouse Students. We dont need everyone going to University. Whoever bought the lie that by having a degree means you earn more are fools – that only works if a certain amount of people have a degeree – if everyone has a degree it simply cancels the advantage

If they can't pass simple math and English exam ffs, don't let them into university as they don't have what it takes to be there.

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

Not everyone needs to be academic. We need more trade workers. Far more than all these university degrees in non-professional fields.

Let’s look at the power to influence one’s opinion by how it’s framed, see below.

    1. “Students are being punished for not meeting XYZ requirements”

    2. “Students are being held accountable for not meeting XYZ requirements”

Now which of those two statements more accurately represents the reality of the situation and which one opens the door to rewarding failure? Because yes, failure, is a part of life and it’s how an individual improves. Does this mean you kick those students to the curb and tell them they’ll never amount to anything? Obviously, no, but you do not set them up for future failure by letting them go about as if they hadn’t met the requirements.

Young people these days are being stitched-up.
Three to four years income lost and tens of thousands of pounds of debt.
NOTE: NO government can create jobs; consumers create jobs.

  21. @mofo5206

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

Yes because they will most likely struggle if they fail basic maths and english, if they are determined they will save for it and pass.

nflatable castles (also called closed inflatable trampolines (CITs), bouncing castles, bouncy houses, bounce houses, jumping castles, jumpers, bouncy castles, moon bounces, or moonwalks) are temporary inflatable structures and buildings and similar items that are rented for functions, school and church festivals and village fetes and used for recreational purposes, particularly for children. The growth in the use of such devices has led to a rental industry that includes inflatable slides, obstacle courses, and games. Inflatables are ideal for portable amusements because they are easy to transport and store.

An inflatable shaped like an elephant

A "Catch A Wave" inflatable slide

Inflatables have been marketed under several names, such as "Bounce House", "Bouncies", "Moon Bounce", "Boingalow", "Astrojump", "Moonwalk", "Jolly Jump", and "Spacewalk".

Inflatable castles have been suggested as having some therapeutic value for children with certain sensory impairments, similar to ball pits.

Yes and no, there needs to be a gray area, I know some one who went to uni who failed maths and english, he got in mostly via experience of his field but he ended up in the top percentage of his class but he wouldn't have been able to attend without a loan.

Agreed though that students needs to be taught that its ok not to go to uni, it isn't your only option, like the life or death feeling they give it now and there are plenty of more routes available now to achieve certain job roles.

Hang on a minute: GCSEs, that’s ‘O’ levels. Anyone who can’t get ‘O’ level maths and English should NOT be going into higher education.

  26. @stephfoxwell4620

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

    Yes.
Nobody with fewer than three A levels at grade C or above should attend University.
    About 20% of people maximum.

University is a scam, even real subjects are so oversubscribed there aren't enough jobs at the end.

  28. @williamhall667

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

I went to a crap school, which was told it needed to improve by Ofsted multiple times. Im dyslexic also and received no help, from older teachers who were just counting down the days till retirement. I left in 2003 and went to college to try and retake my GCSEs. Only I couldn't retake them, I was only able to take Key skills. Not only do most employers not recognise what these are but it also tells them that you failed at school. this leaves you at a disadvantage. they need to bring back the option of being able to retake you're GCSEs in later life. Needless to say whilst at college in earnt nothing but distinctions.

  29. @songscoops4205

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

Quite right…help them pass their exams…there are too many going to uni..and failing to last the course…

  30. @jhjhjhjhjhjhify

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

This won't get rid of Mickey Mouse degrees. The Universities will still treat the students who do get the loans like customers and create these silly courses by demand because fundamentally that's what the loans dictate they are in this context. If University was free to attend then this would be a different story as there would have to be cuts to 'trim the fat' as it were, and many of these specific liberal arts/humanities type courses would be the first to go in theory. They'd also be more discerning about which students are chosen.

For what it's worth I don't have a Maths GCSE (failed it twice) but got very high English grades. Never went to Uni. I don't see how you'd need to know algebra to do an English course, nor how it would mean you'd do well on said course. I know many people who got high grades at GCSE/went to University who are quite frankly thick as pigs*it too.

Who’s the po-faced plonker? He really doesn’t get it! Universities are bloody USELESS for the students themselves and the country too!! He’s living in the 90’s!!

    What a sanctimonious old prat!

I worry that medical students will be admitted to university even after failing biology GCSE.

  33. @action1976

    December 25, 2023 at 8:37 am

Get rid of all the Mickey mouse degrees for a start anything that ends in studies, black studies, gender studies. Just a ponzi scheme churning out stupid and ideological kids with high debt.

It's a fuckin' stupid question because student loans are granted by the banks to people, who will then eventually have to repay them (plus interest) however they perform at universities. The universities have ceased to be seats of enquiry, education, knowledge and have become business corporations and propaganda centres for the latest versions of the woke agenda. They're quite happy to rake in the money. The banks don't give a fuck – they lend some kid money and that kid will have to pay it back with interest. To them, there's no problem.

The question ought to be "should banks be allowed to do that?" or "should universities be gaily profiting from this system?" or more to the point "what professions will we need in the coming years and how could we be preparing and motivating the next generations to take up positions in those professions?" (like – nuclear power plants … have you seen any kids lately who look like they're going to be able to run them when the old sweats pop their clogs? I haven't seen many – not unless you can run nuclear power plants via a mobile phone app).

  42. @colinstuart6708

How about non payment to tutors who fail to turn up for lectures ? One of my sons always said tutor failed to turn up to lecture again and again and was still paid..
