BBC funding model facing ‘great deal of pressure’ says professor of economics

Published

on

‘It’s facing a great deal of pressure, because there is really no way you can justify the current model of funding.’

As BBC Boss Tim Davie is set to be grilled by MPs this afternoon, professor of economics Philip Booth says the broadcaster’s funding model needs to be changed.

The Tories and BBC are in cahoots, so they will carry on with the Marxist propaganda machine for years to come.

    Ugh..
People seem to forget that one of the main selling points of having a national state funded broadcasting channel. Is that it is SUPPOSED to be Britains one chance at having a un-biased, factual and un-adulterated news service. Obviously I am aware that how biased the BBC has become in recent years, but it will only get more biased if it becomes privatised, and then susceptible to advertisers and other outside entities that will seek to influence the information it broadcasts.
It's such a shame that all these people who want the fee scrapped don't realise the true value of having a state funded TV channel. And that their small "victory" of not having to pay £170ish a year is worth not having a media company that is ultimatley responsible to the people of this country.
Small things please small minds I guess.

In Australia, ABC is funded by taxpayers dollars as TV licence ended back in the 70's.

Make the TV licence fee voluntary and then see how many people want to support this woke Marxist cabal. Let the people decide what its worth.

bbc should observe cbc in canada.. paid by public funds and no commercials. political party ads have equal access during elections.. emergency broadcast system for national updates and natural disasters.. advancement of intelligence with informative topics.. lots of people still listen to radio, and prefer analog so it doesn't cut out just because less than 80% signal

I pay the TV licence but do so under pressure , the BBC makes some good content but I do not wish to pay for all the woke ,biased anti British sentiment that it spews out . Separate out All that nonsense and make that content a separate subscription and I would gladly pay 100 pounds per year for the rest

I've written a book which I have decided is very good value for money for everyone. Regardless of whether or not you choose to read it, you will be charged for it if you want to read other books.

No mention of local radio. It's not just TV. I used to be a supporter of the BBC, but no longer as I've felt their attitude has become condescending and discrimatory to people outside of a specific clique. It isn't just television though.

The left wing elite want to continue their political correctness programming of Britain, so they will always oppose something which jeopardises that. These people need to be stopped, they hate our country.

  18. @simongaines7347

This gasbag refers to the BBC as a 'State' broadcaster,if that were so surely it's programmes would reflect the views of the government of the day.As the organisaton has been resolutely leftist since at least the time of Margaret Thatcher his assertion is rubbish.Perhaps the views of a media lecturer should have been canvassed rather that an economist?

  19. @magenta6754

    December 23, 2023 at 6:32 am

The BBC used to be great and produced some excellent dramas and documentaries. But sadly, it got taken over by Marxists and they have ruined it and people have understandably lost any love for the BBC.

  20. @unhingedbracket121

    December 23, 2023 at 6:32 am

Pressure? They are bankrupt. No one wants them. It's only their maffia model of business that has them on life support.

  21. @chesshead

    December 23, 2023 at 6:32 am

If it is as good 'value for money' as they tell us it is, then make it optional and watch everyone subscribe to it.

  26. @raven-sf3di

    December 23, 2023 at 6:32 am

We do need the British broadcasting corporation what we don't need is the BBC , I have no problem paying a TV licence just not for over paid elitist business men and their celebrity chums ,so they can dictate what's modern and for them to tell us what we need to enjoy wile paying themselves big bonuses

What the TV licence should be for is to give people a leg up into the industry ,training and cheapening production, re usable sets and props help funding for SFX work for digital and practical effects and animation
Look how popular YouTube became with people working out their back bedroom the TV licence should be funding the next step up and open for anyone to give it a go

  27. @KernowFay

    December 23, 2023 at 6:32 am

267K wasted on one diversity chief that doesn't know the meaning of the word. The BBC doesn't represent the majority.
Firstly you are not only paying for one channel you are paying for everything you watch "live as streamed" so if you have Sky sport and watch live games the license covers that or if you watch Downton Abby as streamed the same. 2nd you are also paying for internet services and all the background equip. 3rdly is the gov that benefits from this they want the tax to continue so goodness knows how high that is per person when you consider how much is wasted on the BBC. 4th as someone else stated it is not compulsory if you don't watch any live channels you don't need it. But I'm sure they will change that if they can. Then you always have the threat of someone coming to your house when you are doing nothing wrong. Since my MP is so keen to do what the majority want with Health passports he should also do the same with the BBC & license. If the wokists want it, let them pay for it it only represents them anyway..
