I am an international nurse working in Central London. I was attacked by two thieves. They stole my necklace, kicked me to the ground, and I sustained severe injuries to my hands and legs. I am currently undergoing therapy to address the trauma. I reported this incident to the police. The incident occurred during broad daylight at 1 pm in the afternoon, in an area with numerous surveillance cameras. However, the police have conducted only preliminary investigations and have not taken further action.

I'm being stalked by a gang and the police have refused point blank to investigate. To make matters worse when I've reported this in the past the police officers always inform this gang that I have reported them, then the police officers just melt into the background. I feel alone and living in fear of, one day, being murdered by these scumbags and I also worry the cops will close the case without bringing the culprits to justice. They're basically breaking their oaths by doing so and clearly couldn't give a flying fuck. the impact they've had in my life for this and in the past has been devistating. i now see them as criminals themselves.

If the police cannot do there job to protect the public. The self defence laws and self defence weapons laws should be rewritten. You should be able to protect yourself your family and your property without police intervention (as they’ll turn up 2 hours later) when either your property is long gone or your bleeding out on the floor after being stabbed multiple times. Or worse

Now it's easy to do all this, jobs are gone due to brexit(another point topic) and that always increases crime.

A reform which encourages ethical policing and rewards police in the 40-50s, when they retire and engage in a career change, ought to lead to a more productive civil society. The securing of civility is supported by a retirement which is more fruitful if the civilization is more productive. In order for the civilization to be productive, we need honorable people engaging one another in society. The police must honorably enforce the law so there is honor for all. The markets have to be honorable, and the police know what they are getting themselves into. It's the NFL, not a pension program. The police union ought to prioritize post career employment planning. They ought to have anywhere from 25-15 years to still engage and be productive before they retire. I know that they can certainly work as security CCTV observance rooms, but I'd like for them to be a little more versitile.
One business I really like is Firehouse Subs, and what I would suggest from the Police Union is open stores in neighborhoods that the current police need to protect so their equity is not negatively impacted once they retire and open a franchise of their own with their honorable discharge money. I really see ex-Police officers as running most arcades, sell hamburgers and hot dogs, video games etc… and replace the filth! You know those neighborhoods better than anyone else! That's why arcade video games are good, you need something more than just hamburgers to attract kids to your business. They should know that crime is bad for business. If they want to start a business when they retire, they have to at least arrest people for violating the law. They aren't the prosecutors.
They may not be living in the neighborhood, and get criticized for that, but working in the neighborhood, investing in the neighborhood, employing people in the neighborhood, and prospering from all this activity is not guaranteed. They ought to be respected for at least trying to replace the black market with some tax paying businesses. It's not foie gras, but it's crack either! If they are holding out on enforcing the law because they want a pension, and the French are burning tires in the street because they looking for their pension, I don't know where we are going to find the Leprechaun. I'd just say this, the Leprechaun has obviously done a full Venezuelan, and fled the city!
Crime is an exponent of culture and economy. It can have exponetial growth or reduction. There is a formula for significantly reducing crime, it's based off a prediction of the abstract, so it's social not scientific, but you can predict the magnitude and multitude and predict the location where crimes will be committed. You don't get to know the future, but you can erode or promote propensity for things being a feature of reality. The federal government should not pay police, but they should have reason to regard them as individuals who are invested and positioning themselves to make future investments in their communities.

But what are the reasons for decline in the police officer numbers?

  37. @raymondvaughan6262

    December 22, 2023 at 7:32 am

It's 100 percent getting worse police don't haven't got any control over it youths are not bothered about the police now because they just get away with it should be heavy sentences no life of luxury playing games watching TV its not working at all give them hard life some people better off in there which is the truth get it right they won't want to go in

  38. @gunark

    December 22, 2023 at 7:32 am

    Two things not covered here that a major factors;

    1) Police uses the THRIVE (Threat, Harm, Risk,Investigation, Vulnerability, Engagement) system to classify calls – not just crimes, calls as many calls are not crimes – and while low level crime is devastating for those involved, a control room Inspector has to make a decision on whether they allocate their usually meagre resources to that, or to the high risk missing person, or the street violence, or… and each time it’ll be the lower level crime that loses out.

    2) police are swamped with mental health cases as the mental health system has been wrecked by the current government. Police have repeat offenders with mental illness that cannot be left alone or have to be taken to hospital for self harm after an arrest. This is time spent that doesn’t result in a crime but does take up considerable resources.

The answer is on multiple fronts. Yes more police – and police staff – are needed. They need to be paid well for the job they do as well to stop attrition. But also the other support systems – mental health, youth, even schools, need investment to become resilient and not need to farm out their issues to the police forces.

You said "In a democratic society"…. haha good one thats a great joke you did there. The Tories said to the police to ignore low level crimes. As the police work for the law makers not the public. Even tho the police are public servants.
And the police would be at a scene in seconds if they were called by a corporation company.

Home Office data is really the worst place to go to get an idea of crime levels in England and Wales. It only includes crime recorded by Police, and not only do the police not record every crime that is reported to them, it won’t include crime that hasn’t been reported.

I realise it’s impossible to look at a data source which includes all crime, as so much crime goes under the radar. However, the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is probably a much better source to consult as it will include crimes that people were pressured into not reporting, or were thrown out by the police.
