Force the banks to allow google authenicator and yubikey. Make it law. Also transactions must take 3 working days, unless in person. 3 days is enough for an email or an app message. Google authenicator is still good because the app would work for a bit, if the sim got ported. Password reset or number change with apps, has to be done in person. This all has to be video recorded and passed to the customer and law inforcement. By law, a copy has to be given to the customer. Banks need to keep all video recordings for a year, even when given to the customer.

I wonder how many people have left the video when the footage cut to a “guy in a black hoodie in front of a screen with green text” and the script said “the internet makes it harder than ever to track fraudsters” thinking it’s a segue to VPN ad.

It seems to me that a good method for tackling some scams is paid time-wasters and anti-scammers. The thing with a lot of scams is that the success rate is very low, so if the marginal cost per attempt is anything more than trivial, it serious eats into the profitability of the whole venture.

I just threw up in my mouth (figuratively). You just sumarised most of the bs happening in the uk. They can just openly admit that they dont give an f about people getting scammed. That would be an excercise of onesty from the govt. Everyone would just sleep better at night.

Have policing in many forms to penalize drivers..
IF all use is on line why surprise of online fraud.

Meta. At least half of the advertising I see on Facebook is scams with adverts claiming “get this (necklace/projector/bag) free when you sign up”. They are obviously scams but of course they have that all too often seen “sponsored advertisement”. Sponsored advertisement means any scammer can just create a simple website to take card details and address data but never actually deliver anything. It’s also prevalent on instagram! I see so many adds now on insta and most of them are from companies you would never have heard of. Meta really need to be taking more responsibility for what they are allowing to be advertised and actually take some accountability when people get scammed.

Honestly, I'm so annoyed. I'm really tech literate and I even know about scams. But I had really hard time getting customer service for PayPal in my country since they did not display phone number for it on the site.
Ultimately I had to go trough painful process of calling US service first. Then asked to call Ireland, and finally passed into local number, which was still in English lol 😀

But yeah, I got super frustrated and googled PayPal Finland number, and there it was in site with local language, site was kinda rough but since it was third party site I didn't pay that much attention since I was working at the same time and annoyed with whole thing.
I called it, and gave them my email, along with number since I called there. They asked me to get to computer, and again became frustrated because I know you wouldn't need one so I went back and fort for while, then I said I will call back after work when I'm at computer. Moment I closed the phone and had time to think I knew I called scam call center, I mean Indian guy called freaking "Robert" and insistence to do this at computer.

I wouldn't have fallen for actual scam, since I'm pretty security aware and actually know how scams work, but I could have given them more information. Really, this just really just showed me that you just need to capture person at appropriate time, personally I was frustrated by whole process and distracted because I was also working at the same time.
At least now I internalized what I already knew. Fortunately only information they got is my phone and email.ä, not even my name.

Perhaps the Government's scattergun approach to solving the nation's economic problems could result in the formation of the Department for Fraud Specialists and Fruit Pickers. It would also mean the two specialisms would be nicely near each other in the alphabtical Google search results.
