The whole issue is about money. We should have a credit based system, not a debt based system. If the central banks can create the money out of thin air, how can they charge interest out of that money. This whole world is completely bonkers and whoever you vote for, the same system will still be in place, benefiting the people who run all these Ponzi schemes and scams that are happening on a pandemic type level. We must wake up as a species and realise we are here to live and not here to serve the few who are controlling the system.

the bar to getting into Uni should be high, but because now its a business, it's open to all, whether you are capable or not. a lot of people should never even be considered for Uni,
they mount up debt that they should never have accepted. Uni is supposed to weed out the stupid and incapable, it's supposed to be for the best of the best.
sadly now its all about bums on seats, regardless of ability.

Politicians attack young people and students for going to university rather than going into the trades or vocational opportunities, at school they never explained the real opportunities out there when you got into Sixth Form it was given at my Sixth form that you would go to university and there was no alternative

I really liked Tice originally, but some of his policies have deterred me. Reducing the term and reduces the places are a good idea, but why should the rest of the taxpayers who did not go to uni pay the interest cost of Govt borrowing for those that do, especially those that do not complete their courses? Graduates start work 3+ years later; expect to earn significantly more: and retire earlier, so let them bear the cost of their decision. Thereon, all banks will write off debt deemed unrecoverable on a macro level for accounting purposes, but they still pursue the individual debt and charged interest. It is a bookkeeping exercise. Indeed, only around 30% of students will fully repay their debt. He has some good ideas, but he appears unable to consider the full consequences or alternatives.

Student loans get written off after 30-40 years, you don't even pay it off if you earn a low wage

  17. @mikehunt8968

    December 20, 2023 at 10:04 am

It all goes back to 1997 and Tony B Liar, aka Miranda or Charles Lynton…
They made all the school leavers go to university, if remotely possible, mainly to keep youth unemployment figures artificially low!!!!!
They only cared about the figures making them look good!

  18. @mrannonymous4822

    December 20, 2023 at 10:04 am

As someone who graduated a few years ago all I can say is don't go to Uni unless the field you want to work in requires a specialist degree. I have a decent job now and have started repaying but when I started off all I can say was there were so many cannon fodder jobs out there which don't even require a degree. The first company I worked for had about half it's employees who never went to Uni and purely had experience. I worked my way up but effectively you don't need a degree to open doors or succeed it's all experience and self determination. University is the greatest lie avoid it if you can!

You can only consider uni if you live in Scotland or you come here from abroad, the life long debt is just not worth it.

Who pays for the 100s of 1000s foreign students that come here to cough cough study?

I read an article about 10yrs ago that said foreign students own the UK £400 million in unpaid students loans every year. I bet u can triple the £400 million now.

  23. @mogznwaz

    December 20, 2023 at 10:04 am

Education has become a huge global business, mass indoctrination camp and Trojan Horse for foreign ‘students’ to get into the country and never leave. Can foreign students also get student loans that are written off?? The student loans system is just one part of it. The whole thing is rotten to the core.

When my daughter picked up her master's in English the bloody professors were striking outside demanding more money and increased pension! How dare they make it about them! Huge pensions and pay for very little work. They are simply not in the real world.

The other irony is university’s are no longer providing people with the skills industry requires. The skills gap is a massive problem to the UK economy ! So many companies can’t employ the people with the skills they need. This is costing the economy over £100 billion and growing per annum !

  27. @dartmoor123

    December 20, 2023 at 10:04 am

When Blair decreed that 50% 0f young people should go to university, academics couldn't understand the logic of the requirement. However, the academic system soon invented rubbish courses at degree level, and masters level courses for areas where ther were were no possibilities of subsequent employment. Some courses appear to be part of the immigration industry . Where is the integrity in the academic sector? The best courses are sandwich courses where the student does 6 months in industry and six months at college, with no long holidays

Tice's criticisms are valid I believe, both for graduates and for the Exchequer. It's long been evident that politicians of all flavours are keen to associate themselves with high tertiary education participation rates, and the loan scheme seems designed in part to kick the can so far down the road that today's Parliamentarians don't have to worry about the future debt mountain nor about the effects on the economy of adding 9% to income tax for half the country.
As for solutions, Tice's contribution is at best facile and at worst deeply cynical. Extending the term to 45 years will, thanks to fiscal drag, draw many more lower earners into the repayment zone when their debts would otherwise be forgiven after 25. As a result, his suggestions are extremely regressive and unhelpfully naive. Not to mention how he would propose to cut university places by 20%; or lawfully vary the terms of the £200bn loans already issued.
