Thousands of Russians fighting for a Ukrainian passport – BBC News

Published

on

More than 170,000 Russians are still living in Ukraine after their home nation launched its full-scale invasion on the country, according to figures from the State migration service.

Some are even fighting in Ukraine’s army. But their situation is complicated.

They say they can’t access basic services without a Ukrainian passport. To get that, they’d first have to travel to Russia to surrender their citizenship.

“Ukraine is on the path to authoritarianism,” the Mayor of Kiev Vitaly Klitschko has said. “There is only one independent institution left –local authorities– and they are under enormous pressure.”During the conflict, the central government has been communicating poorly, if at all, with local authorities, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital claimed.“In a year and a half since the beginning of the conflict with Russia, there has not been a single meeting or telephone conversation between [the city of] Kiev and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. At some point, we will get to the situation where everything depends on the mood of a single person,” Klitschko told Der Spiegel.

Why does everyone pretend that Ukraine is a normal country, and Zelensky is the president?

Let me remind you that in 2014, in Ukraine, internal terrorists seized power. The constitution and laws of the country were destroyed. Terrorists with weapons broke into the parliament and the president's house.

Later, these terrorists themselves appointed themselves the main ones in the country.

There was no impeachment. The legal president was fleeing death.

Now these terrorists are attacking the Russian regions.

Has everyone forgotten this? Why does everyone stubbornly pretend that Ukraine is a legitimate country? Since 2014 there is no country. The people in this territory is not a country, it's just a territory since 2014.

Zelensky is not legitimate, he has no right to govern. In fact, the rule of the territory of Ukraine is a crime.

The EU countries and the USA are aware of this but turn a blind eye to the criminals because the criminals agreed to fight with Russia, this suits the EU and the USA, so everyone pretends that the criminals of Ukraine are in power, this is normal.

It is not normal. Ukraine has been occupied by terrorists for 9 years.

Why did everyone abruptly forget that in 2014, in a country called Ukriana, terrorists seized the government and gained access to power? All zabli military takeover of the country?

Why does everyone pretend that this is a normal phenomenon and nothing has happened in Ukraine?

Let me remind you that in 2014 Ukraine was seized by terrorists by military seizure, the legal president fled from death, and the regions who did not agree with the seizure of the country, the new terrorist "government" having access to the army began to suppress and seize by force. Nobody remembers this?!

Why does everyone pretend like everything was normal there?

According to all international laws, in 2014 the country of Ukraine ceased to exist, the constitution and laws on equality and democracy were violated! Why does everyone pretend that Ukraine is still a country.

After the seizure of the country, the terrorists held their fake elections in the hope of making themselves legitimate, but these are fakes, they still exactly remained terrorists!

Now these terrorists have attacked Russia and all the euros are silent, as if this is normal.

    It is not normal.

    Stop calling Ukraine a country.

In 2014, there was an armed seizure of power in this "country"! Not democratically with a vote, but an armed seizure with weapons and militants !!! People with weapons broke into the parliament, the president's house, the administrative building, seized everything by force.

Those who seized power with weapons now rule Ukraine!

    They are not legal!

"Ukraine's President Zelenksy has been making some big personal purchases in the form of luxury yachts ahead of his ouster into exile. Investigators discovered Zelensky's proxies have bought two luxury yachts totaling $75 million. Where did they get that money? The purchases were made through the same close associates Zelensky has used before to make proxy purchases of real estate and other luxury goods." From Redacted.

Ukraine needs to change the laws. Or have a special route to be approved on a case by case basis. No one who is Ukrainian at heart & for whom returning to Russia would be dangerous should be turned away. Under no circumstances should she have to go to Russia to renounce her citizenship. Russia is never to be trusted.

I understand this isn't a straightforward thing. – EXCEPT if a person fights in the Ukranian armed forces, there can't really be any reasons not to give citizenship. I haven't risked my life for Sweden, and just got citizenship for free based on parents and birthplace. If you go out and risk you life, you have a thousnd times more right to a citizenship than I have.

Good part of that 170 thousand had years if not decades to renounce Russian passports. Many chose not to do so. Ukraine was full of Russian spies before the war. So some degree of septicism towards Russian passport holders is understandable. I’m confident that Ukrainian state will treat favorably people who proved their allegiance during war time. But as you can imagine granting citizenship is low on priority list of Ukraine. It has to survive first and make sure that Ukrainian passport still exists in few years time.

    December 18, 2023 at 11:49 pm

I have relatives with Russian passport who lived in Ukraine for 20 years. They never wanted to give up Russian passport for two reasons. First, to keep Russian pension payments and , second, they never respected Ukrainian statehood. They loved Putin and we had a lot of arguments over their allegiance. Dear BBC, don’t try to identify another “victim” group. It’s not helpful.

Ukrainian passport system is fckd up..
I work for an airline company. We had Ukrainian refugee family who wanted to buy the tickets for the flight but they didn't have passports (I'm still wondering how they got into our country, I bet illegally).
I was like "I'm really sorry but I can't sell you the tickets if you and your children don't have any documents". However, a mother said they can't even get passports cuz an Ukrainian embassy don't let them get passports since they are from Mariupol (this city is occupied by Russia rn).
I asked the authorities but they rejected me to sell the tickets for them. I don't know what happened to them after that. I hope they're alright 😥

Given Russia's invasion, I can understand Ukraine's reluctance to accept Russian citizens. The fear of a Russian "fifth column" to undermine Ukraine has always been a clear and present danger to its existence. The Russian "fifth column" will eventually force Georgia back into Putin's new USSR.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
