Boris Johnson has never looked politically weaker. Marred with scandal, polling at one of its lowest ebbs and heading into a local election with serious issues. However, it seems he’s locked himself in Number 10, so is he politically unstoppable?

We should never forget the Boris has been a crisis management PM. He hasn’t had chance to govern in the normal way or get anything done he would have liked. Hopefully the next two years will be different and come election time people will judge him on that. Also the Conservative party have absolutely no other potential leader. Liz Truss? I can’t imagine anyone worse except maybe Teressa May. I can see Hunt getting the nod but he is very odd.

A punishment vote against conservatives is unavoidable. Whoever comes to power now will be gone on the next election. The economic troubles for the public and businesses can not be fixed as they are profound and will get worst. So why not to blame Boris at election time and present a new face then?

I'm no Tory, but many of the moderate, principled Conservatives were ousted as they wouldn't support Brexit. This cabinet is totally lacking in ability or character. No wonder there is no obvious successor.

It's not really surprising. When Cameron quit there was already a lot of uncertainty, and no one wanted to take over until May bit the bullet despite clearly not wanting to. When she left the only one who wanted it was Boris. I think everyone in the Troy party knows how big of a shitstorm whoever's left at the top will have to take responsibility for and no one wants to be their Gordon Brown.

…The Westminster System elects Parties…not Leaders…"The Westminster System is often contrasted with the Presidential System that originated in the United States, or with the Semi-Presidential System, based on the Government of France."

    1. Authority bias; An Elite education implies higher level of knowledge so the common man believes what Boris says as he holds a higher status than most. A faux meritocracy. This works for all Tory MPs. Also, regional dialects are seen as uneducated so estuary English/RP/Posh BS will always win the day no matter the subject.

    2. Two tier education; Non-fee paying education is so bad that most people don’t understand basic political principles such as how an economy works, privatisation vs state-owned, post-colonialism etc so the electorate can be moulded during a campaign into being fired up about something they previously had no interest in, or had little impact to them. Just look at the culture wars now.

    3. Power structures; most brits think we elect the PM but we don’t. We vote for the party in our area who then selects a leader. But they run it like a presidential election so non-party voters vote out their local MP because they want Mr Popular. Thus, they run their campaign entirely on the heir-apparent. Hence the Boris majority win during his “I need a majority to push through Brexit” lies before the last general election against Corbyn. It worked.

And Boris will never resign because he cares more about Prestige and Status than the health of the country. The only way to rid him is to have a collective belief he is personally responsible for the issues we face to ruin his reputation. Not Covid, not the EU, not Immigrants, and not any other political group that can be vilified at the time.

It's wild that rightwingers have so internationally convinced people that they're better on the economy when they so consistently damage the economy when they're in office.

  26. @ondank

    January 5, 2024 at 6:53 am

As a socialist, Boris Johnson makes me so angry.
But if I was a conservative, I would be furious. For whatever disdain I have for David Cameron, he was actually a conservative who appealed to conservative values. Johnson has turned the conservative party into a populist party that would toss every value or institution it claims to hold dear out the window for another term. Nothing could be less conservative.
