Can Coronavirus be contained? – BBC News
The coronavirus had infected 74,651 people in China as of 20 February, with 2,120 of them dying.
It seems to start with a fever, followed by a dry cough.
After a week, it leads to shortness of breath and some patients require hospital treatment. Notably, the infection rarely seems to cause a runny nose or sneezing.
The incubation period – between infection and showing any symptoms – lasts up to 14 days, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
But some researchers say it may be as long as 24 days.
And Chinese scientists say some people may be infectious even before their symptoms appear.

Signal president Meredith Whittaker warns that AI could âsupercharge mistakesâ in warfare | BBC News
AI can always be controlled, the president of encrypted messaging app Signal has told the BBC.
Meredith Whittaker said fears that AI could become conscious and take over were “not anchored in science and evidence”, warning instead about the dangers of using the technology in military decision-making.
The former Google employee said AI could “supercharge mistakes” and reflected on her role in opposing the company’s involvement in a US military drone surveillance project.
Speaking to the BBC Global Women, Whittaker also questioned who gets to shape the future of AI, criticised the concentration of power in Silicon Valley and explained why Signal would leave a country rather than compromise its users’ privacy.

Developer Moonshot is conducting an internal review after researchers were able to persuade two of its popular Kimi models to tell them how to make biological weapons and carry out assassinations.
Mindgard, which tests the security of AI systems, told the BBC it discovered in July that Kimi K2.6 and K3 Swarm could evade safety limits put in place by developers.
It arose during a process called “jailbreaking”, where researchers use a series of complex instructions to see if AI tools ignore guardrails – which Mindgard said should have stopped Kimi from discussing concerning topics.
Moonshot told the BBC it welcomed third-party input “as a key pillar for building better and safer AI”.

A top safety researcher at Anthropic has warned AI is advancing so quickly he believes there is a greater than 10% chance it “could kill all humans” within the next decade.
Evan Hubinger said the risk from the models which currently exist was “low” but he was “worried” the technology might develop and improve itself soon to the point where it posed an existential risk to humanity.
Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher who has just quit Anthropic and previously worked at OpenAI, has also said âneither company is acting responsiblyâ.

The UK Health Minister, Matt Hancock said there were no plans to restrict flights to
and from Italy. Furthermore, he stated that should people feel ill upon returning to the UK âwith symptoms like a sore throat…â that (the returnees) should self quarantine. The Minister has overlooked a key hazardous fact, namely, people could be feeling perfectly well, but could be âsilent carriersâ of the Corona virus â infecting others as they go about their daily lives, before succumbing to the contagion themselves – possibly over 14 days later! Mr Hancock further implies that since the rest of Europe is seeing an increase in cases, there would be no merit in restricting business and holiday flights in and out of the UK. Mr Hancock fails to grasp the fact that Europe is a continent, while Great Britain is an island in the North Atlantic Ocean! The imposition of travel restrictions to and from this island could delay the virus by several months, wining us valuable time to develop a vaccine. So, are these open- season policies going to result in another âSpanish fluâ in the British Isles? Given the unprecedented spread of this virus, I think that question might be answered in the affirmative. And when thousands have died as a direct result of this laissez-faire approach; just as millions died during the âSpanish fluâ outbreak, will that old chestnut: âlessons learnedâ be touted as in 1918 -1919 as the perennial get out of jail card?!

Jennifer, China must contain the virus and have responded correctly. Refer to Dr John Campbell, who is far more expert on this. Hospitals cannot cope with a sharp rise in cases. It is true that eventually nearly everyone could become exposed, but slowing the spread is critical. Hospital services can become overwhelmed. Also, we need to buy time for the development of treatment and vaccines.
Of course it is going to impact our lifestyle for a while!

They should have let all people stay where they were at… freeze travel, no more flights, no more crossing borders. Thatâs how you could have contained it. Just because they look normal and donât show symptoms doesnât mean theyâre not infected, so meanwhile that person is traveling and spreading it. Shouldâve freeze travel for everyone, for everyoneâs safety.

I believe these so called experts would have a very different opinion after they see data today about the increased cases in Italy and significant drop of new cases in China.
