A little caveat is that Milton Friedman ()whom Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher admired) proposed Negative Income Tax and NOT UBI. He was against UBI. Negative Income Tax is a way superior system in my eyes than UBI (even though negative income tax still sucks).

  3. @jish55

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

Yes, we need a UBI, BUT also need to implement price caps to negate possible inflation risks. The only real issue with a UBI is that because companies can raise prices as they see fit, they'll do so and in turn cause the economy to collapse while also making a UBI pointless since they'll just see it as an excuse to raise prices again. If you fine businesses and landlords while also making sure no one obtains too much, and it could very easily fix our broken economy (because you get, say, $3000 a month, that is enough to live on currently, but isn't enough to overspend and buy up everything. With $3000 a month, it will afford you rent, food, the means to pay your bills, perishables, and a little extra spend money, even in the cheapest areas in the country. We could increase it to $5000 a month, and that would basically end poverty and homelessness as long as we also negate the ability to raise prices, in turn making sure a UBI will LAST without fear of it causing the economy to collapse on itself).

I think UBI would be the most practical when automation has the ability to displace a majority of low – mid paying jobs.

If the world is going the way of automation, then you can't expect people to just starve.

I think UBI should be enough to live a simple life (not a harsh one, just a simple one with little conflict). If you want a life of luxury then you work. UBI means less pressure while you work on your skills, retrain and plan on getting a good job.

But if there are less jobs going around in general then the UBI would have to be adjusted.

In the future computers, robots automation and ai will be able to do almost every job better & cheaper then humans. With the population also growing there will be a point where there just isn't any jobs. Working will be a thing of the past for most industries outside art, entertainment & creativity. universial income will be needed.

  9. @liammcguinness7824

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

IMO a more substantial form of working tax credit preferably modelled off the French system would do a much better job than just giving out free money to everyone irrespective of their current wealth which would do nothing to solve inequality and likely cause more inflation.

  10. @ldandco

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

And where is that money coming from ?
Whoever thinks that money comes from thin air is delusional.
Someone will have to pay that money.
And usually is the productive sector. Putting then more pressure into the productive apparatus.
This will no doubt create more inflation. Meaning the UBI will need to be increased on a periodic basis.
Meaning that the productive sector will have more and more pressure over time…. this will destroy the weakest in the productive sector first, then continue with the stronger ones.
And whoever thinks this is not a socialist mechanism, you need to understand how economics 101 works

  11. @davidcooks2379

We have shortages of labour in a lot of industries, there is no point in UBI in this environment. We need care workers, child carers, nurses, doctors, conveyancers, plumbers, builders, electricians, programmers, HGV drivers, fruit pickers… People should work, not sit on the dole

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but didn’t Friedman advocate for a negative income tax rather than UBI? NIT is most definitely not a form of UBI.

This is great, I'm so sick and tired of having to work hard while my neighbours chill out on benefits and then when I'm out driving I see people in fancy houses and with flash cars who have probably never broken a finger nail to get these flashy things.

  17. @mypointofview1111

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

Its wrong to say there's no one place where there are records of people, try hmrc for those who pay tax. Anyone earning over £100k gets a lower amount of say, £500 each month. Those who cannot work get a flat rate of £30k per year. You can then get rid of the means tested benefits system. Those who are pensioners, long term sick & disabled should get £30,000 per year which will enable them to live not just barely scrape by.

  18. @mypointofview1111

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

To get a real perspective of how UBI would work read "The Deficit Myth" by Stephanie Kelton. Our understanding of economics is wrong & out of date. Everything is affordable by governments

  19. @mypointofview1111

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

I agree universal income is a necessity, not a luxury. 10 years of austerity have shown that the race to the bottom serves nobody but the really rich. Lockdown only served to emphasise that when people cannot work the economy tanks, badly. What concerns me is that the level for a truly universal income will be set too low. People who are unable to work for whatever reason still have to pay the rent, utility bill, various taxes before anything else. Just staying afloat is a big deal. Then you have to factor in that we live in a consumer society. I think the starting point has to be £30,000, certainly in London. And that's just a basic amount, not for luxuries, treats etc. If you're a pensioner or disabled or long term sick that will help with rising costs of care & equipment. Don't forget you still have to pay rent/ mortgage, taxes, so its not luxury living by any means. This will enable housing benefit to be scrapped. I don't understand why you have to apply for a separate benefit when you're already in dire straights. Being poor is a humiliation, having that emphasised for each part of your life helps nobody. Certainly doesn't help your self esteem if you're lucky enough to get another job in the future. The British government loves to belittle the poor which is why benefits are so unrealistically low & why homelessness rises whenever the tories are in power.

UBI is a great idea for a country with many highly educated people: Now people have a safety net to pursuit their dreams, or create new technological innovations without fear of failures, or pursuit a totally different career path that would otherwise be impossible to do. All those endeavors of the educated people will eventually accelerate the GDP growth for a country.

  21. @Aaramlias

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

At times I barely get by or i'm a couple weeks behind on bills because the cost of living keeps going and money coming in isn't coming in so fast.

If they gave everyone $1000 as a top up and got rid of programs like welfare and EI, you could always login to a site every couple weeks like you do with Employment Insurance (EI) here if you need better then the minimum and record any income earnings you have. If you make over a certain amount you just might not see as much over the basic amount. If you earn too much in year and are getting too much of the top up then you might have to pay it back in your income taxes at the end of the year. Any other money from the government could be incorporated into the UBI as well.

I think it would be great too for small business owners like myself who don't always make enough to get by. I'd keep focusing on that if I had the extra money per month. I know other people too that wouldn't stop working as well .. because they need something to do …. but if they wanted to take time off for something they could do it without losing their shirt … also people wouldn't have to work 2-4 jobs just to get by as well.

  22. @XxHaythamKenwayxX

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

I think too much focus is put on the job/laziness aspect. Sure, you're going to get people who dont want to work to not work, but at the same time, there simply wont be enough jobs for the population to go around, especially as automation continues to grow.

Instead, people who want to work (and this is a large majority) will continue to work or try to find work, for the social aspect as well as even higher a gross income for themselves and their households. When it comes to the point that automation takes up most of the work force – which is a long time away but sooner than we probably think – many people will likely be able to choose to volunteer their time into care, help to clean the environment, study new things, better themselves, boost their personal health and well-being, and even help fund technologies and progression that could eventually lead us into the 'final frontier' of space exploration at last.

A lot more aside from work ethic is on the line as humanity goes forward, and a lot more can be done to make more people feel satisfied with their lives without having to feel that a job is the be-all-end-all of being on the right path to happiness.

  23. @matthewrichard9626

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

I'd personally rather see the personal tax allowance increase to something like £20K.

  24. @Paul1962

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

Yes we should, UBI is akin to the invention of the steam engine! it would start a financial revolution, changing the world beyond recognition.

  25. @Paul1962

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

Yes we should, It is the future, and will happen sooner or later. Of course the rich and powerful will do everything they can to stop it, or slow it down as much as possible. If we really want a better world, with a better quality of life, then we should start embracing it now, but UBI is only the first step on a long journey.

  26. @aelfwine2

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

Could it be funded through negative taxation?? ie richer people would gain through increased taxation credits and poorer people would have their income stream topped up on a regular (weekly/monthly) basis

  27. @dadikkedude

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

So basically, let people starve to death as a motivation. No wonder this world is overproducing….

We already have a form of UBI. It's called the state pension. The only difference between this and UBI is the minimum age at which people receive it. In reality, even UBI is not truly universal. In order to receive it, you have to be a 'citizen', however that's defined, and there would be a minimum age at which people receive it (just like the state pension). So, one way of implementing a UBI would be simply to lower the pension age, gradually, until it covers everyone down to age 18 (or 16?), say. It might also make sense to taper the payment so that people get a bit more as they get older until the payment reaches a maximum at the current retirement age. UBI would essentially replace the state pension.

  33. @timfrudenberg8324

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

Excellent video 👍🏼 UBI is an excellent idea. The way the world is heading – it's essential!

  34. @tamaskarsai2072

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

I think It should be implemented as everybody gets it. For those who earn a lot what I think it can be done like if they pay like 10K for taxes and you got 2K from this, than they would only need to pay 8K for taxes. so if someone has 2K tax after his payment than he gets the tax back from this. and also who has 0 taxes on his payment he would just get 2K from it.

  35. @douglasadams7803

    whoa whoa whoa

we're going to use an annual payment to the populace of a state with the lowest population density anywhere in north america as the basis for universal basis income?

  39. @AnjumulHaque

    January 1, 2024 at 11:09 pm

I personally believe western society should first have universal basic necessities, like food stamps should be less restrictive and allow to buy many grocery items also considering only US have this basic social service of something so basic that hungry people can live there not worrying about starving to death, but it's not in many developed countries like Europe and UK should adopt similar to food stamp. Similarly US is lacked behind in having universal health care for all, they have healthcare but it's specific to age, income, giving less power to patients yeah they should have universal health care first. So many things to go through and fix first, like how about a Singapore style investment scheme that their citizens get in their mandatory savings, investment is no less than an income.
Then how about home ownership either through public housing or not through easy loans or not.
First the basic necessities should be implemented everywhere in the world then they should be talking about ubi some countries don't even have retirement benefits for old people. USA however being seen by outside people, they have the most necessities from food, shelter, retirement, housing everything kind fixed up they have most welfare benefits provided by any democratic country I know of only thing they don't have is universal healthcare even then still most gets the compulsory insurance and get the cost covered, but when they fix this USA will be no longer a laughing stock because they have always kept themain important things in place.
It is after all these things are addressed then I think a country is ready to have a Universal basic income or a Negative income Tax

So many are currently trapped by benefits. The only jobs they can get pay less than their benefits, so it makes sense for them to live off the tax payers dime indefinitely.

I believe that the vast majority of people if given the option would work.

It would also give people the freedom to be more selective of where they work. And how much they work for. As someone who's worked hard to get where he is since he was 16. I think the benefits far outweigh the costs. UBI is the kind of safety net I want for my kids.

In recent weeks many people have grown frustrated by the government’s COVID regulations, leading some (even within their own party) to reject what they see as government power grabs. Some have even compared COVID Britain to the world portrayed in George Orwell’s 1984. So in this video, we discuss the new powers the government has, why some people are angry about them and whether we really are getting a bit 1984.
