How can India tackle its water crisis? – BBC News
“Twenty-one of India’s major cities may run out of ground water as early as 2020 according to a government report. Some experts contest that assessment but daily water woes are a part of life for almost half of the country’s population.
The southern city of Chennai, where reservoirs are drying up due to a delayed monsoon and poor water management, is severely affected. Residents there have been queuing up to collect water from rationed government services, and schools, hospitals and restaurants are struggling to cope. Meanwhile, the Indian government has set up a new Jal Shakti (water power) Ministry, and is proposing a massive project to interlink India’s rivers as an answer to the water crisis.
We focus on water conservation and management solutions to India’s water crisis. We speak to a water activist based in Chennai who restores lakes and ponds, the head of a Delhi-based non-profit that works to recharge groundwater, and a water expert who specialises in rural irrigation economy and policy making.

A top safety researcher at Anthropic has warned AI is advancing so quickly he believes there is a greater than 10% chance it “could kill all humans” within the next decade.
Evan Hubinger said the risk from the models which currently exist was “low” but he was “worried” the technology might develop and improve itself soon to the point where it posed an existential risk to humanity.
Jacob Coxon, an AI researcher who has just quit Anthropic and previously worked at OpenAI, has also said “neither company is acting responsibly”.

AI-powered smart glasses are rapidly moving from science fiction into everyday life.
Meta has already sold millions of pairs, with supporters claiming they could become the next major computing platform, helping people make calls, translate languages, identify objects and navigate the world hands-free.
Privacy campaigners warn they could enable covert surveillance and lawsuits have raised concerns about consent and data collection, and some venues have banned them altogether.
Some critics have labelled them “spy glasses” and “pervert glasses”.
So are smart glasses a new surveillance threat? Or are we in danger of demonising a technology with the potential to benefit millions?
Joining the discussion are AI ethicist Dr Stephanie Hare, Silkie Carlo from Big Brother Watch, and consumer tech expert Ben Hatton from CCS Insight.

A new personalised vaccine given in combination with a drug has stopped skin cancer returning in patients during a trial, representing a potentially watershed moment in cancer treatment. Scientists used mRNA technology, which was used for some Covid-19 vaccines.
But that technology – and vaccines more generally – have become increasingly controversial in the United States since the Covid-19 pandemic. The Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, is a vaccine sceptic.
In August 2025 cancelled $500m (£376m) in funding for mRNA vaccine research. The move impacted 22 projects being led by major pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and Moderna, for vaccines against bird flu and other viruses, according to Kennedy’s department.
We speak to Tom Whipple, host of the BBC’s Inside Science programme, about the science of this new vaccine. And we ask how funding cuts for vaccine research could impact health outcomes not just for Americans, but for the world.

The solutions are simple :
1. Build canals to bring the waters from Indus kashmir, ganges n brahmaputra to the rest of india.
2. Create artificial lakes to collect rain water and from flooded rivers as much as possible.
3. Plant as many trees as possible not only in cities but also on hills. This may change the climate favourably.
4. Desalinate sea water as much as possible.
5. But i will not be surprised if the central authorities remain passive n reactive, foolish n stupid.
