The Irish troops watching Israel’s hidden war – BBC News

Published

on

Along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, since 7 October the Israel Defence Forces have also been engaged in continuous fighting against the Lebanon-based Islamist armed group and political party Hezbollah.

The group are seen as terrorists by governments including the UK, and have long been opposed to Israel’s presence in disputed lands in the south of the country – resulting not in a border, but a so-called ‘blue line’ drawn by the UN, dividing the two nations.

From the Lebanese front line, embedded with Irish UN peacekeeping troops, Nafiseh Kohnavard reports.

Peace keeper? It's a waste of time, they have zero control over what Hezbollah is doing, like enforcing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Lets face it, Lebanon is not a country any more, it's just, another, land that Iran is using as a terror base. Lebanon used to be the crown jewel of the middle east but since Yasser Arafat and the Arab Palestinians moved in to this country, after they were deported by the king of Jordan (read about "black september"), this country went in to a self destruction mode.

Considering the fact that the Irish divide has historically been compared to the Isreal/Palestine one – since Oct 7 I wonder if this will open wounds.

Brave guys , those Irish Peacekeepers . Too bad that Hezbollah and its arsenal are flourishing right under UNIFIL's nose . Apparently the UNIFIL crest features the 3 monkees : hear no evil , speak no evil and for the love of God and all that's holy please don't see any evil . If I'm lying , I'm buying .

The Irish are by far the strongest of the Celtic family and they set a fine example for the rest of us.

    Best peace keepers around, too.

The UN and the Irish troops can be ashamed of themselves for being anti Israeli biased.
According to resolution 1701 they signed to keep hizbullah 10 km from the Israeli border which they didn't do. Hizbullah is provoking Israel into a war that the UN could and should prevent. They're only good for condemning Israel

With all due respect to the Irish. UNIFIL have and are failing at their mission. Their mission is to keep the peace, but Hezbollah keeps launching attacks from under their nose… which results in the growing Israeli retaliatory attacks that this piece mentions. The IDF's attacks on Hezbollah have been in response to incidents of Cornette (anti-tank) missiles, mortars, rockets and machine gun fire being fired by Hezbollah at Israeli military and civilians near the border. UNIFIL has not been able to stop these. This is a very biased piece making it seem like Israel is the aggressor, when it isn't. At all. I challenge BBC NEWS to reach out to me and come see this from the other side of the border to get the full story.

  17. @eelelaelad

    December 30, 2023 at 7:51 am

But not even one word about the fact that Israel is only reacting to attacks by Hezbollah!
Israel did not attack or operate in southern Lebanon until the terrorist organization Hezbollah attacked towns and civilians.
And of course there is no mention of the fact that, like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah operates, like mice, in and behind the civilian population.
This is what the BBC will not dare to present because it is contrary to the channel's anti-Demiic narrative!!!
    Shame on you!!!

As an Israeli, who lives in the Golan Heights and saw both wars at Lebanon, I can say that UN troops are the most useless thing in the region. Irish, Poles, etc. All of them run away when Hezbollah comes. Even druze militia has more firepower and experience than this nonsense you call "troops". Yet, only IDF can keep peace and fight terror in the region nowadays. Not these blue boys.

US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News

Published

on

The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.

“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.

In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.

Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News

Published

on

President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.

He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.

Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.

Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.

The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.

US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News

Published

on

The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.

President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith in Washington.
