A heatwave continues to grip large parts of Europe, with authorities in many countries issuing health warnings amid searing temperatures.

Southern Spain is the worst-affected region, with temperatures in the mid-40s Celsius recorded in Seville and neighbouring areas.

A new heat record for June of 46C was set on Saturday in the town of El Granado, according to Spain’s national weather service, which also said this month is on track to be the hottest June on record.

Red heat warnings are in force in parts of Portugal, Italy and Croatia, with numerous amber warnings covering areas of Spain, France, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland.

How the Taliban is running Afghanistan five years after returning to power | BBC News

Published

on

The BBC has been given a rare glimpse at how the Taliban is running Afghanistan, five years after it swept aside a US-backed government in the country to return to power.

In that time, women have been excluded from most workplaces, banned from universities and may not travel alone or visit parks and leisure centres.

In encounters spread over two years, the BBC gained unusual access to influential figures in the extreme Islamist movement, spending time with men who once planned suicide attacks or spent years in underground hideouts, but are now officials and soldiers.

US flags lowered in Dolly Parton tribute | BBC News

Published

on

Iconic country musician Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced on her social media.

“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” Parton’s nephew Brian Seaver said in a video announcement.

In a seven-decade career, Parton won 10 Grammy awards, sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and wrote in excess of 3,000 songs.

Parton took her writing seriously, and considered herself a songwriter over everything else. “It’s my way of expressing myself,” she said. “It’s my therapy.”

She was also a savvy businesswoman who wasn’t afraid to make tough decisions. Armed with a quick wit and southern charm, she took control of her show business career that spanned more than 60 years.
