Mass protests against Trump across US as president holds huge military parade | BBC News

Published

on

Protests against President Donald Trump have taken place in towns and cities across the US, organised by a group called “No Kings”.

The demonstrations were held to counter a rare military parade hosted by Trump in Washington DC, and came after days of protests in Los Angeles and elsewhere over his immigration policies.

Lawmakers, union leaders and activists gave speeches in cities including New York, Philadelphia and Houston to crowds waving American flags and placards critical of Trump.

The military parade on Saturday evening, also Trump’s birthday, was timed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army. He warned that any protests at the parade would be met with “heavy force”.

Is Trump’s grip on Republicans bad for the party? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

Donald Trump is exerting his grip on the Republican party ahead of this year’s midterm elections, analysts say. This week, with the help of an endorsement from the president, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton easily defeated Senator John Cornyn in a primary vote, to decide who will represent the GOP in November.

President Trump has campaigned against at least three Republican incumbents, including Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie and Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy – both of whom also lost their primaries.

Our Washington correspondent Daniel Bush tells us that President Trump uses his endorsements to reward loyalty and punish dissent. But how could that strategy affect the party’s chances against the Democrats in the 2026 midterms – and beyond?
