UK flatters Donald Trump with invitation from King for second state visit | BBC News

Published

on

President Trump has been invited to the UK for a second state visit by King Charles. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer used his trip to the White House to present Trump with the invitation letter from the King.

Sir Keir said the president’s last state visit in 2019 had been a “tremendous success” and that the invite for a second visit was “truly historic” and “unprecedented”.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office after reading the letter, Trump said he accepted the invite and that it would be an “honour” to visit the “fantastic” country. He added that King Charles was a “beautiful man, a wonderful man”.

Traditionally second-term US presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle.

Sir Starmer presented the letter from the King to President Trump, during their first meeting since his return to the White House for a second term. The leaders discussed Ukraine, with Sir Keir hoping to persuade the US to provide a military “backstop” to any European peacekeeping force deployed in the country. They also talked about trade, with the British government hoping to avoid tariffs which Mr Trump is planning to impose on other countries.

Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Chris Mason, Faisal Islam and Sarah Smith.

Negotiators for the US and Iran have agreed a framework of a deal that would extend their ceasefire for 60 days and launch negotiations on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, US sources say.

The agreement comes amid continued strikes and accusations of ceasefire violations, with tensions still high across the region.

Talks are also said to include potential changes to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Trump and Iran reach tentative deal | Global News Podcast

Published

on

More than three months after the US and Israel first began their war with Iran, Washington and Tehran have reached an initial agreement to bring about a more long-term end to hostilities.

US President Donald Trump has said it paves the way for what he called the “toll-free” opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He called on ships to start their engines and “let the oil flow”.

The full text of the deal has not yet been released. Pakistani mediators say the agreement will be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday 19 June.

Our US State Department correspondent Tom Bateman tells us that President Trump and Iranian officials are already giving different accounts of what’s been agreed.
