A new chapter has begun for the Norwegian monarchy. 🇳🇴👑
King Harald V died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, immediately succeeded him as King of Norway under the country’s constitutional rules.

At the extraordinary Council of State at the Royal Palace, the new monarch formally announced his accession and confirmed that he would take the name Haakon VIII. He also chose to continue the royal motto “All for Norway” (Alt for Norge), the same motto used by his father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

King Haakon VIII is 53 years old and becomes Norway’s fourth monarch since the country’s independence in 1905.

His daughter, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is now first in line to the Norwegian throne.
