Darién Gap: BBC follows journey of Venezuelan migrant to US | BBC News

Published

on

Migration will remain of one of the top issues for US president elect Donald Trump when he takes office on the 20th of January.

One area of concern will be the Darién Gap – a treacherous strip of jungle connecting South and Central America.

It’s renowned as one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world.

The number of migrants undertaking this perilous journey has fallen by nearly 41% in the last year as the Panamanian government clamp down on illegal crossing – and US President Elect Donald Trump is likely to support those measures.

But despite the risks, for many people it’s seen as a vital route towards the US.

Trump: US has seized Iranian cargo ship on eve of peace talks | BBC News

Published

on

The US has intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to get past its blockade of Iran’s ports, according to US President Donald Trump.

He said the ship was given “fair warning to stop” in the Gulf of Oman but refused, so the navy “stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room”.

Earlier it was confirmed that a US delegation led by the Vice President JD Vance will be In Pakistan for a new round of peace talks with Iran. However Iran has not confirmed that it will be participating in the talks.

Trump has again threatened to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges if they do not reach a deal with the US, including reopening the strait of Hormuz to international shipping.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lyse Doucet in Iran and Simi Jolaoso in Washington.
