Iranian women reject hijabs despite morality police return – BBC Newsnight
In September it will be the anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the Iranian Revolutionary guard for allegedly not wearing the hijab properly.
Last year the movement for “Women, Life, Freedom” exploded onto the streets of Iran, and beyond, but in the country it was met with breath-taking brutality.
More than 500 were blinded deliberately, thousands more arrested. But women are still defying the morality police, despite a renewed crackdown involving mass surveillance, risking violence and incarceration.
The BBC cannot operate in Iran. The internet too, is restricted, and for many its a crime to talk to Western media, but Newsnight’s Emir Nader, and producer Ali Hamedani talked to people inside the country to give us this virtual tour of Iran after the Women, Life, Freedom protests.

The BBC has witnessed Israeli settlers attack Palestinians and set fire to olive trees in the occupied West Bank.
Several dozen settlers dressed in black charged down a hill near an outpost – illegal under Israeli and international law – to a field where Palestinians and activists were harvesting olives. They torched about a dozen trees and hurled stones from slingshots.
Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine, who was at the scene, was taken to hospital where she told reporters she “got jumped” and described being kicked on the ground.
The UN says the past two weeks have already seen more attacks by violent Israeli settlers than during the entire harvest season last year. It says this year levels of settler violence have reached an all-time high.

This week tens of thousands of young people have taken to the streets of Delhi, India’s capital, demanding changes to the electoral system and the resignation of the country’s electoral commissioner. Thousands have been detained by police in the process.
They represent the ‘cockroach’ movement, a grassroots campaign group started by a Boston University graduate in protest at government policies and high youth unemployment. How did a movement that started as a meme capture the minds of India’s young people, and start to pose a challenge to its long-serving prime minister, Narendra Modi?

Becareful for the freedoms you wish for.Here in the United States one of the most free countries in the world now Men are dressed like girls and fighting for rights to go to womens bathrooms and dressing as girls and fighting to compete in sports with girls..I would say Iran is a bit strict but as an American i admit we become delusional and toxic with the demands people have pressure for in recent times

I have never known an Iranian woman in Canada to wear this thing. They come here and take it off. They can take it off if they want to, if they want to wear it, of course you can – what a dumb and deeply outdated system where you don’t have a choice. This is why if you don’t support democracy and separation of religion and law I cannot respect that. Sorry.
And one more thing: muslims do many, many less visible “haram” every single day, (and each individual knows it, that is between them and God) but this particular thing is visible so women are an easy target.

Ah !!! The religion of peace strikes again ! The way they treat women is abhorrent. Many in the uk Muslim community condone this treatment of women, want sharia law and think their religion is superior to all other religions. Many view British women as cheap because of how they dress, many openly condemn gay people and use vile, derogatory language when speaking about them. That level of discrimination and intolerance has no place in our civilised, inclusive country.
