Ukraine making front line ‘progress’ against Russia – BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine is making “modest but steady” progress across its 1,000km front line against Russia, Ukrainian forces have said.

A BBC team has been on the ground with a Ukrainian brigade pushing to reclaim territory in one of the three areas of attack across the front line.

Troops are launching probing attacks, while most of Ukraine’s forces are being held in reserve, waiting for a big enough opening in Russian defences to launch a main attack to recapture land in the south of the country.

    If Putin wanted an
    "off ramp"
    he could have
    used the recent
    "coup attempt"
    (whether or not it was staged)
    as an easy
    excuse to
    withdrawal troops and
    spin it as merely a
    temporary pause to
    reorganize his command structure after
    purging disloyal enablers of the "rebellion", and to
    train soldiers on
    brand new technology (arms, munitions, GPS guidance, drones, Etc.) which he could plausibly assert will give Russia even greater
    battlefield superiority (Etc.)
    … then he could have stalled resuming this war indefinitely.
    That he didn't, suggests he's
    continuing to strategize, which is cause for
    speculation about whether, when, and where Prigozhin might
    strategically reappear as a continued tool of Putin's.

  12. @rosemariebredahl9519

    December 23, 2023 at 12:38 pm

    Re counteroffensive:
    1) Much of the earlier arms and munitions Ukraine was given relied on Elon Musk's Starlink Satellites after Russia blocked prior GPS communications, but Musk later withdrew access to Starlink for weapon use. Thus Ukraine's need for both alt GPS access and more weapons that didn't depend on GPS guidance.
    2) We've learned that the news from Russia about crippling disruption in their command structure has not caused the vulnerabilities on the battlefield that would be consistent with Putin's reports about the recent rebellion.
    3) Putin's atypically non-aggressive response throughout the "coup attempt" seems "fishy" enough, that I believe it's not yet clear whether it was staged, or what the motivations & full related agenda might be if it was (Ex: To accuse anyone of participating that's on a "wish list" to be "purged", to position Prigozhin +/- some Wagner troops elsewhere in plausibly deniable ways, to later allege the "rebel" Prigozhin committed acts Putin wants to disassociate himself from, Etc.)
    It seems highly unlikely that Putin didn't at least have advance Intel re the "rebellion", info on unscheduled advances toward Moscow while Prigozhin et al were en route, or orchestrated the event himself.
    In addition, neither we nor maybe Prigozhin even know with certainty whether Putin plans to use Prigozhin as a
    scape goat for
    future Russian acts
    (Ex: "tactical nukes")
    &/or
    past International
    war crimes,
    annnnd, whether Prigozhin suspects Putin considers him "disposable" and thus he has "disappeared" instead to hide from Putin
    (vs just from Russia's enemies as part of a longer term plan of Putin's )
    regardless of whether he agreed to
    stage the coup as part of some master plan Putin's attempting vs
    was truly exiled to Belarus vs
    believes he may already be a target of Putin's assassins (Etc.).
    ~~~~~~~~
    I believe these may help explain why Ukraine's counter-offensive didn't benefit from the recent "coup attempt" reported by Russia.
    Time will tell.
    I have not seen or heard any British journalist ask mad Zelensky about the British passenger plane shot down over Ukraine. Zelensky immediately said that the Russians shot it down; which was a complete lie, and he knows it. How many thousands of foreign passenger planes have flown, and are still flying, over Russian territory in complete safety. Please remember that Zelensky was, and is, the leader of a government that was reckoned to be the most corrupt in Europe. People in that corrupt government owned holiday homes around Europe and maybe other places. Why hasn't the bent BBC questioned him and his colleagues about these facts. Absolutely disgraceful! They should be ashamed of themselves. Has no one in the BBC got the balls to ask these questions?
    Its crazy how people are dying daily on this war because of a foolish reason. Russia could go back where they belong and nothing would change, this is what greed does to the human being, soldiers are dying and some innocent died as a consequence of explosions, children being left alone and fatherless, war crimes being committed, and in the meantime, Putin drinks the best wine, fucks his wife and eats the best steak money can buy with the money of the Russian taxes. Funniest thing is that nobody cares about the situation, and if Russia steals Ukraine successfully, nobody will do anything about it.
    Russian Security Council: Ukrainian forces reduce activity, lose 13,000 in counter-offensive
    Today (22), Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a meeting with the permanent members of the Security Council of Russia, asked Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to report on the situation in the conflict zone in Ukraine.
    Sergei Shoigu reported to Putin that the Ukrainian Armed Forces still have offensive capabilities, but Russia is preparing to respond to further actions. The Ukrainian Army has suffered significant losses, has reduced its activities and is regrouping.
    The Defense Minister stated that it is already clear that the weapons already delivered to Kiev and those that will be delivered will not significantly affect the course of the special operation.
US hits ‘dozens’ of Iranian sites in strikes, as Iran targets US bases in region | BBC News
Published
on
The US said it has hit “dozens” of Iranian military targets in overnight attacks, in response to Iran hitting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The military said it struck “air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats”, using aircraft, ships, and drones – including “one-way attack sea drones for the first time”.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime corridor for global trade,” the US military said. “Iran does not control it”.
In response, Iran said it targeted US bases in Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait and also radar systems in Oman.
Trump demands 20% toll on cargos passing through strait of Hormuz | BBC News
Published
on
President Donald Trump has said the US is reinstating a naval blockade of Iranian ports and will impose a 20% charge on all cargo shipped through the Strait of Hormuz following days of escalating strikes between the two countries.
He said this would stop “Iran’s ships or customers” from entering or leaving the key oil shipping route, but “all other countries will have fair and open use of the Strait”.
Iran’s foreign minister later said whoever provides safe passage “should be compensated for this service”, but Iran would remain the strait’s “GUARDIAN” – using Trump’s word.
Tehran and Washington clashed over the strait’s control after exchanging strikes in the region overnight and on Monday.
The US said it carried out strikes against military targets in Iran, targeting air defence systems, coastal radars, and missile and drone sites. Iran said it responded by striking US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain, and radars in Oman.
New explosions near Iranian port cities, says state media | BBC News
Explosions have been heard near two Iranian port cities, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, state media has reported.
It comes after another night of strikes between the US and Iran, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps saying it hit two UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and targeted US facilities in Jordan and Bahrain.
The UAE called the attack “brazen”, adding that an Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured.
Meanwhile, the US military says it completed strikes on targets aimed at degrading “Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping” – Iranian state media reports three people were killed.
US launches more strikes on Iran and resumes naval blockade of ports | BBC News
Published
on
The US military said it was carrying out a new wave of strikes on targets in Iran. It said the aim of the attacks was to degrade Iran’s ability to attack shipping in the strait of Hormuz. It came ass the US Navy resumed its blockade of Iran’s ports.
Iran said that control of the strait of Hormuz was required for its national security and it will exercise sovereignty over the key shipping lane, whatever the cost.
President Trump announced that he was scrapping a plan he had announced a day earlier, for placing a 20% toll or tariff on all cargos passing through the strait of Hormuz.
