Children on puberty blockers saw mental health change, new analysis suggests – BBC Newsnight
The majority of children in a landmark study on puberty blockers experienced positive or negative changes in their mental health, new analysis suggests.
The original study of 44 children, who all took the controversial drugs for a year or more, found no mental health impact – neither benefits nor harm.
But a re-analysis of that data now suggests 34% saw their mental health deteriorate, while 29% improved.
The new study has not been in a peer-reviewed journal yet.
The authors say they felt there was an urgency in getting the information into the public domain.

Cyber Attack: Ransomware causing chaos globally – BBC News
Tens of thousands of organisations have been caught out by a computer virus called WannaCry. The malicious software locks data away and demands a payment of up to $300 (£230) a time before it will restore scrambled files. In the UK, many hospitals fell victim and some health organisations diverted ambulances and cancelled non-essential services as they sought to contain and clean up the infection. Infections in more than 99 nations are being reported by security firms. It appears that the hardest hit are Russia and Spain.

Is this AI’s moment of truth? | BBC News
A year ago, artificial intelligence was being sold as something close to science fiction — a technology that could transform society, cure disease, even reshape the global economy.
Today, the tone is changing. The companies leading the revolution are racing to the stock market — chasing billions in investment — while quietly confronting a much harder reality: AI is expensive, unpredictable, and far from profitable.
At the same time, some of the very people building this technology are warning we may be going too fast — even calling for a global pause.
And beyond Silicon Valley, a different story is emerging: growing public anxiety, political backlash, and the rise of what some are calling anti-AI populism.
So is AI entering its most pivotal moment yet — caught between financial pressure, technological risk, and political resistance?
AI Decoded Presenter Christian Fraser is joined by Financial Times AI Editor Madhumita Murgia, Thematic Strategist at Deutsche Bank Research Adrian Cox and Richard Coffin, Host of popular investing podcast ‘ The Plain Bagel’.

the drugs cause early onset osteoporosis, prevent critical and NECESSARY brain development from taking place, and set kids up for life long medical complications like rheumatoid arthritis, not to mention these drugs render children PERMANENTLY STERILIZED.

What happened to the 15 children alleged to have deteriorated mental health? No link to the original study nor the reinterpreted study you derive the figure of 15 from. This is weak and full of supposition.

Hey BBC. Any news on Bidens failed southern border, the millions of illegal immigrants entering the United States on a daily basis, or how Joe created more jobs in his first 2 years in office, than any president has in 4 years?

I remember reading on Tumblr (lots of trans people there) that puberty blockers were harmless. When I searched for scientific papers myself a while ago, though, I found that the evidence was mixed –at best. This analysis once again shows that puberty blockers were implemented without adequate thought. But trans people, like everyone else, suffer from the cognitive bias of believing what they want to believe. My opinion at present is that we should 1) stop overdiagnosing being transgender, 2) let puberty happen naturally and support transgender people with physical aspects of transitioning when they're adults, 3) fully accept trans people as forming part of the diversity of the human race.

Think entire fad is pushed to far, by parents, teachers and medical professionals. Just my humble opinion and it has to stop. They can wait until they reach age of majority. My opinion is tainted with bias, as i was put into the foster system in order to make me like a white person, because I was born Indian and the government is still trying to take the Indian out of the Indian. When I was placed in my final foster home I mostly spoke three Indigenous languages with some english . My parents tried to get me to speak english but I had a hard time, so my grandfather's took me and taught me Heiltsuk, Nu7lhalk and Chinook. By the time I aged out i could speak none of my ancestral languages, how i wished i could speak those languages once i found my roors again at twenty seven. That's when my moms told me i didn't speak much english when I was last taken away. Today if I'm not expecting to be spoken in either of the three languages I'll answer in english. I haven't lost them, they're sleeping within me. Now in some circles because I have learned a lot about Indigenous culture, i am considered an Elder, but i see myself as a knowledge keeper.
I was forced to live like a white man until I was 19, and I'm considered to white to live in my traditional territories.
When you force grown-ups ideals on children you marr them for life.

As a trans woman living in New Zealand on one of the long acting "puberty blocker" 3 month depot injections I’m astounded by how toxic this comment section is. You’re not allowed onto them until you’re sixteen and by then your shoulders are already starting to broaden. I went on it at 17 and it saved my life. I don’t believe I would be here if it wasn’t for an understanding GP. There’s so many hoops and hurdles you have to go through and the 3 month waiting period where they do two psych evaluations and ask you extremely dehumanising questions. Like "what pornography do you masturbate to" "do you cut yourself on your genitalia" and "how do you masterbate, what do you typically use" which would never be asked of somebody who identifies with the sex they were born in. Only after then are we allowed access to gender affirming healthcare in the form of prescriptions otherwise the majority of trans people are self medicating with imported hormones, and we would rather they were in the healthcare system than not. It’s just a simple fact that my identity is being used as a political talking point when it has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with dignity and privacy. Are we not entitled to a shred of decency ?
