The BBC gains rare access to people inside Iran | Global News Podcast

Published

on

BBC Panorama has gained rare access to people inside Iran – telling the inside story of how their lives have been shaped by a year of war and anti-government protests.

In this episode, we hear from Samira, a mother whose 16-year-old daughter was killed during anti-government protests. Samira fled the country on foot, and now lives abroad in hiding.

We also hear about the medic who received patients injured by bullets as the regime cracked down on protests.

Months after the wave of protests swept through the country, what does dissent look like in Iran today? How has the war with the US and Israel affected opposition voices?

Iranian authorities acknowledge that more than 3,000 people were killed in the protests, but claim some were members of the security forces.

One human rights group, Hrana, however, estimates the number of dead stands at more than 7,000 – most of them protesters.

The Iranian embassy in London told Panorama that peaceful and legitimate protests had been hijacked by foreign powers, including the US, which promoted violence, provided weapons and equipment, and compromised public security.

James Talarico gives victory speech after winning Texas Senate seat for Democrats | BBC News

Published

on

Democrat James Talarico has won a key Senate race in Texas, in what is likely the single biggest upset for Republicans in this year’s elections.

Talarico’s stunning victory over Republican Ken Paxton marks the first time a Democrat has won a US Senate seat in Texas since 1988 – and has helped solidify Democrats taking full control of the US Congress in a tidal wave of wins across the US.

Paxton sought to portray Talarico’s views as too progressive for the state, and campaigned alongside Trump on several occasions.

As the nation’s second most populous state, Texas has been a bastion of conservatism, routinely rolling out Republican policies that are later employed elsewhere.

At least 60 dead in bomb carnage at Kabul Airport – BBC News

Published

on

It was a scene of carnage in Afghanistan, after twin explosions near Kabul Airport, killed at least 60 people and injured dozens more.

The first blast is thought to have been the work of a suicide bomber, passing among the crowds gathered for more than a week at one of the airport’s main gates, to try to get flights out of the country.

The second was at a nearby hotel. Along with Afghan civilians, 12 US military personnel were killed

There had been warnings in recent days that an offshoot of the Islamic State group in the region was planning an attack and ISIS-K has claimed it was behind the bombings.

The Pentagon says evacuation flights will continue, despite the threat of more attacks.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lyse Doucet and Secunder Kermani in Kabul, Aleem Maqbool in Washington and security correspondent Frank Gardner.

Karl Bushby completes 28-year journey from Chile to Hull | BBC News

Published

on

British adventurer Karl Bushby has completed his 31,000-mile (50,000 km) journey from South America to Hull in the UK, reuniting with his mother at the family home 28 years after setting off.

In November 1998, the former paratrooper, then aged 29, set off from Punta Arenas, Chile, to complete an unbroken path back home, without breaking two self-imposed rules: not to return to the UK until the end of the journey, and not to use transport to advance.

Bushby said only about 15 of the 28 years were spent walking, with struggles obtaining visas, the 2007 global economic crash and Covid blamed for delays.

He often retreated to Mexico, where costs are low, between stints.

Under the rules he set for his journey, Bushby could not return to the UK to meet his family.
