Why is FIFA is ‘selling’ the World Cup? | Global News Podcast

Published

on

The BBC’s chief football news reporter Simon Stone tells us about Fifa’s controversial plan to sell stock in the World Cup.

Football’s global governing body is registered as a non-profit. But Fifa boss Gianni Infantino has proposed a new subsidiary called Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE), which would sell shares to private investors, and run major events including the World Cup.

Fifa says the lead investor would likely be Thrive Eternal, a US venture capital firm founded by Joshua Kushner – whose brother Jared Kushner is President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.

Mr Infantino has said that the individual football federations which make up Fifa stand to make an initial $20 million if they accept the plan. But Europe’s UEFA – which is among the most powerful of those federations – has said the proposal “crosses a line”, accusing Fifa of using football “to enrich themselves and their friends”.

Meanwhile British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Fifa is “selling out”, saying that “the World Cup is not a product. It is the greatest competition in world sport, and it was never anyone’s to sell.”

Meta hit with its largest fine ever for ‘lies’ about user data privacy | BBC News

Published

on

Meta was ordered to pay $25bn (£18.6bn) by a judge in New Mexico after a two-week trial earlier this year which found it had spent years lying to the public about how it handled Facebook user data.

“The lies extend beyond Facebook’s data practices as well,” the judge said, adding they went to “the heart of Facebook’s core business practices”.

Meta’s head lawyer CJ Mahoney said the ruling made it “all but impossible to do business in the state of New Mexico”. The company intends to appeal, which Mahoney says will be successful.

New Mexico’s lawsuit stemmed from the role of Meta in what became known as the Cambridge Analytica scandal and New Mexico had also accused the company of intentionally misleading the public on how it benefitted from content that included hate speech.

Did adult entertainment sites invent monetising attention? | BBC News

Published

on

With the advent of OnlyFans, pornographic content has become a fixture of mainstream social media. But the influence of the adult entertainment industry on internet culture arguably began decades ago. On this episode, Matt and Marianna are joined by journalist Patricia Nilsson who has reported extensively on the secretive personalities who control ‘Big Porn’ and the business model behind it. We discuss the revolutionary data tracking practices first implemented by so-called tube sites to monetise attention, the regulatory trade-off between safety and privacy, and why anonymity online may be leading to more extreme pornography fuelled by our most primal instincts.

Top Comment is hosted by Marianna Spring and Matt Shea.
