Conference Planning Trends in Australia

Published

on

Conference planning in Australia is moving towards flexible, technology-enabled and delegate-focused events. Organisers are no longer choosing venues only by room size and price. They want spaces that support engagement, comfort, catering, hybrid participation, accessibility and measurable outcomes.

The IACC Meeting Room of the Future Barometer 2026 highlights similar global shifts, drawing on meeting planners, venue operators, IACC members and industry experts, including 124 venue operators across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

## 1. Delegate Experience Comes First

Delegates judge conferences by the complete experience: arrival, comfort, technology, catering, networking, breaks and venue access. The IACC report identifies “experience creation” as a major trend.

Clear signage, arrival coffee, comfortable seating, breakout spaces and well-timed breaks can all improve the event.

## 2. Flexible Room Layouts Are Essential

Modern conferences often move between presentations, panels, workshops, training and small-group work. A fixed room layout can limit engagement.

Theatre, classroom, cabaret, boardroom, U-shape and workshop formats each support different outcomes. The IACC report notes that adaptability remains important, with venues using versatile furniture for rapid reconfiguration.

## 3. Shorter Sessions and More Interaction

Long, passive sessions are becoming less effective. Delegates respond better to shorter content blocks, Q&A, polling, workshops and peer discussion.

The IACC report notes that venues are adapting to younger-generation behaviours with frequent breaks and spaces suited to shorter attention spans. Organisers should build variety and buffer time into the agenda.

## 4. Technology and Wi-Fi Are Critical

AV and Wi-Fi are core conference requirements. Presenters, delegates and remote attendees rely on screens, microphones, presenter connections, hybrid tools and reliable internet.

The IACC report highlights internet access and sufficient bandwidth as essential technology elements. Organisers should confirm online meeting setup, cameras, room microphones and onsite support.

## 5. Room Design Affects Engagement

Meeting room design influences focus, comfort and participation. Natural light, acoustics, lighting, temperature, sightlines, ergonomic seating and table space all affect delegate satisfaction.

The IACC report highlights the importance of acoustics, lighting and natural light. These details matter most for full-day and multi-day conferences.

## 6. Catering Is More Personalised

Catering is now part of the event strategy. Delegates expect food that supports energy, wellbeing and dietary needs.

The IACC report found increased demand for dietary preferences and reduced alcohol consumption. Organisers should collect dietaries early, confirm numbers, plan healthier options and label food clearly.

## 7. Breakout Spaces Matter

Many valuable conference outcomes happen outside the main room. Breakout spaces support networking, catering, private calls, sponsor conversations, small-group work and delegate reset time.

## 8. Sustainability, Wellbeing and ROI

Sustainability and wellbeing are now part of conference planning. Practical actions include choosing CBD venues close to public transport, reducing printing, managing catering quantities and supporting delegate comfort.

Success should be measured through attendance, feedback, engagement, training completion, leads, stakeholder satisfaction and post-event actions.

## How Karstens Supports Modern Conference Planning

Karstens provides purpose-built conference and training venues in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Karstens supports modern event trends with CBD locations, flexible layouts, ergonomic seating, natural light where available, built-in AV, reliable Wi-Fi, hybrid capability, catering, dietary management, breakout spaces, onsite support and consistent service across multiple cities.

## Conclusion

Conference planning trends in Australia are moving towards flexible, technology-enabled and experience-led events. The best venues help organisers create conferences that are easier to manage and better aligned with business outcomes.

What happens if nobody can form a government? | The Front Page

Published

on

Imagine waking up after election night to find neither side has enough seats to govern.

Polls have suggested there is a chance we’ll see a hung parliament, with neither the left or right blocs having a majority of seats.

With election day fast approaching, we’re looking under the bonnet of how MMP runs, how coalition talks work, and what happens if parties can’t agree on anything.

Today on The Front Page, University of Otago law professor, Andrew Geddis is with us to break down how Parliament works, what happens if the numbers don’t stack up, and how messy things could get.

Host: Chelsea Daniels
