The end of data centres? Apple and Meta’s bet against the cloud | AI Decoded

Published

on

AI Decoded looks at the surprising alliance between Meta and Apple raises one of the biggest questions facing the AI industry. As technology companies invest hundreds of billions into ever-larger data centres, two former Silicon Valley rivals are backing a different vision: powerful AI models that can run locally on advanced desktop computers rather than relying entirely on the cloud.

For years, bigger AI has meant bigger infrastructure. Vast data centres now consume enormous amounts of energy, water and land, while communities around the world are increasingly pushing back against their expansion. But what if there was another way? What if businesses could run powerful AI systems from their own offices, on machines sitting beneath their desks?

Host Marc Cieslak is joined by Ben Hatton, consumer technology specialist and Nate Soares, AI safety researcher and author, for a fascinating discussion on whether Apple’s hardware and Meta’s open-weight AI strategy could signal a major shift in the future of computing.

We went to the scene of Spain’s deadly train crash – here’s what we saw | BBC News

Published

on

The death toll in Spain’s high-speed rail disaster has risen to 69, with authorities continuing to identify victims of the crash.

As the country began its three-day mourning period, protests gathered outside the transport ministry demanding accountability.

The train was travelling from Madrid to Seville when it barrelled into a stationary train on Wednesday morning. It is the second crash on the same line in a year, with 46 killed in January in Adamuz.

The BBC was at the scene speaking to passengers and officials.

Hyrox athlete who soiled herself admits putting others ‘at risk’ but backlash ‘traumatic’ | BBC News

Published

on

An Australian athlete has admitted putting others at risk by continuing to race after soiling herself during an endurance sports event.

Speaking exclusively to the BBC ahead of her return to the sport, Joanna Wietrzyk suggested her determination to win the Hyrox race in Beijing in September had clouded her judgement: “It was my decision to continue racing so I take full responsibility for that”.

Challenged over why she carried on, she said: “I didn’t really think about those around me… the decision that I made in hindsight was the wrong decision and I’m truly sorry for everyone that I did affect.”

The 24-year-old said that the experience and subsequent backlash was “traumatic”. She also said she considered walking away from the sport.

Although initially appearing defiant in a now-deleted Instagram post, Wietrzyk apologised in the week after the Beijing event and said she would forfeit the win and retroactively withdraw from the race.
