How could AI fix fashion’s fit problem? | BBC News

Published

on

With inconsistent sizing costing the global fashion industry billions annually in returns, retailers are desperately searching for a solution.

New AI technology, pioneered by a former Savile Row tailor, is trying to target the sizing issue at its source: the production line.

In womenswear the rate of returns can be about 50%, leaving both the brands and the customer unsatisfied.

At Fit Collective, the AI tool surveys analyses lots of aspects of the garments from returns data to customer feedback, then serves up an actionable insight to help the brand improve fit.

Shiona McCallum reports for TechNow.

President Biden has opened a major global climate summit with a call to other world leaders to step up to the challenge.

Joe Biden pledged to cut US emissions by at least half from 2005 levels by the end of this decade but he warned that his country couldn’t take action alone.

He told world leaders that scientists were calling this the “decisive decade” for tackling climate change and action was needed now.

The latest data shows China is the world’s biggest producer of carbon dioxide, emitting 28% of global output.

China is second biggest, producing 15% with India producing 7%.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by science editor David Shukman and North America editor Jon Sopel.

AI Decoded focusses on one of the most urgent, tangible uses of artificial intelligence: health care — we speak to Dr Regina Barzilay, an MIT professor who is building machine-learning AI models to predict disease.

She herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, and has used that experience and knowledge to target her research towards prevention — the AI model she and her team built, named MIRAI, is now able to detect a patient’s risk of developing breast cancer within five years.

Are we on the brink of a revolution in treating cancer for everyone? Find out on AI Decoded…

Joining presenter Christian Fraser is AI Decoded co-host Stephanie Hare and the BBC’s AI correspondent Marc Cieslak
