Epstein survivors call for release of remaining files | BBC News

Published

on

Survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein appear in a new video calling for more files relating to the criminal investigation into the late financier to be released.

Millions of files relating to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been disclosed by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) since a law mandated their release last year.

However, some lawmakers have accused the DoJ of violating its legal obligations after it said it would not be able to release all the documents by the deadline.

Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, said “several hundred thousand” pages of documents were still being reviewed and had yet to be made public.

Many details in the thousands of files that have so far been released have also been heavily redacted. That has led to criticism, because under the law that compels the release of their files, the only material that can be blacked out is the identities of Epstein’s victims and any information under active criminal investigation.

Shops looted as German cost of living protests turn violent | BBC News

Published

on

Rioters looted shops in central Frankfurt late on Saturday as clashes erupted in German cities over the cost of living.

There were also incidents of violence in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, with police saying they used water cannon to disperse protesters targeting emergency workers with fireworks, stones and bottles.

Thousands joined largely peaceful demonstrations earlier in the day, organised by the campaign group Gen Z regelt, to protest against underfunding in schools, the high cost of living, public spending cuts and military service.

The unrest in Germany follows similar youth-led mass protests in France, where more than 320,000 people also demonstrated on Saturday.

How close is England to running out of water? | BBC News

Published

on

Parts of England are in severe drought, with some reservoirs falling to record lows after the hottest summer on record.

Water restrictions like hosepipe bans have been widely introduced in parts of the country.

The UK government said more than £100bn is being invested in water infrastructure, with nine new reservoirs in the pipeline.

But, as droughts are expected to become more frequent and intense, questions are being asked about the long-term resilience of our water supply.
