A hundred years ago, there were almost no rules. Anyone could bottle a miracle cure, print a promise on the label, and sell it in drugstores, catalogs and even hospitals. Some of these inventions were harmless and hilarious. Others poisoned, blinded and killed the people who trusted them, and a few were still being used in American hospitals in the 1960s.

In this countdown, we go through 39 real medical inventions and treatments from American history: who invented them, what they promised, what they really did to people, and how each one finally ended. Halloween 2026 series (5 of 7) I’ve sent you so much Jess and the Ancient Ones but this is the first I’ve sent from their 2021 album “Vertigo.” It also will be the last album of theirs to feature Jess since they recently kicked her out, which is pure madness. The second album from her Jess By the Lake solo project just dropped a little over a month ago though, so everybody should go buy that instead of whatever nonsense they spew out with her replacement.
