Donald Trump’s claims about Nato troops in Afghanistan criticised | BBC News
Donald Trump’s claim that Nato troops stayed “a little off the front lines” during the war in Afghanistan has sparked outrage from UK politicians and veterans’ families.
The US president told Fox News on Thursday that he was “not sure” the military alliance would be there for the US “if we ever needed them”.
“They’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan,” he said, “and they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines”.
Health and Social Care Minister Stephen Kinnock called Trump’s remark “disappointing”, and said the UK and other allies had “always stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States” and contributed to US-led missions.
The UK was among several allies to join the US in Afghanistan from 2001, after it invoked Nato’s collective security clause following the 9/11 terror attacks.
A total of 457 British service personnel were killed in the conflict.

The US has intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to get past its blockade of Iran’s ports, according to US President Donald Trump.
He said the ship was given “fair warning to stop” in the Gulf of Oman but refused, so the navy “stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engine room”.
Earlier it was confirmed that a US delegation led by the Vice President JD Vance will be In Pakistan for a new round of peace talks with Iran. However Iran has not confirmed that it will be participating in the talks.
Trump has again threatened to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges if they do not reach a deal with the US, including reopening the strait of Hormuz to international shipping.
