Iran anti-government protests spread to majority of provinces, videos show | BBC News

Published

on

Protests have broken out in at least 17 of Iran’s 31 provinces, presenting the largest challenge to the country’s clerical establishment since 2022, a BBC Verify and BBC Persian analysis has found.

The BBC’s analysis of protests includes only those for which we have verified video footage – the true number is almost certainly far higher. There are reports of protests in a further 11 provinces.

The wave of protests has spread rapidly across Iran since 28 December, when anger initially broke out in the capital Tehran following a fresh and sharp devaluation of the country’s currency against the dollar and other major foreign currencies.

Case of alleged gang rape at Cornell University in US reopened | BBC News

Published

on

New York state prosecutors say they will reopen a criminal inquiry into the alleged rape of a woman at Cornell University in 2024.

The woman filed a civil lawsuit on 16 September alleging she was drugged and raped by multiple people at a fraternity house at the university.

“Once we determine the appropriate charges, the case will be prosecuted in the most objective and impartial means possible” through a grand jury, Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said Monday.

Cornell University said that while it supported the case being brought before a grand jury, “any suggestion that the university did not impose consequential punishments for those involved is false”.

But Smelyansky is no military commander. He is the head of Ukraine’s state postal service, Ukrposhta.

The BBC’s James Landale follows the postal workers who are risking their lives.

Now, the giant predatory fish are back – in huge numbers.

Their return is one of several wildlife recoveries highlighted in a major new report from WWF, which it says shows conservation can work.

But the Living Planet Report 2026 also finds that monitored wildlife populations around the world have fallen by an average of 73% since 1970.

A major incident has been declared and homes have been evacuated in a village near an RAF base which hosts the United States Air Force.

Several men have been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act, Gloucestershire police said. An army explosive ordnance disposal team is currently examining a number of vehicles.

Whitehall officials say the investigation into the incident is being led by counter-terror police.

The base has been recently used to deploy American bombers since the country’s conflict in Iran began on 28 February.
