Huge anti-government protests across Iran | BBC News

Published

on

Huge crowds of protesters have been marching through Iran’s capital and other cities, videos show, in what is said to be the largest show of force by opponents of the clerical establishment in years.

The demonstrations in Tehran and the second city of Mashhad on Thursday evening were not dispersed by security forces.

It was the 12th consecutive day of unrest that has been sparked by anger over the collapse of the Iranian currency and has spread to more than 100 cities and towns across all 31 of Iran’s provinces, according to human rights groups.

The US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency said at least 34 protesters – five of them children – and eight security personnel have been killed, and that 2,270 other protesters have been arrested.

Norway-based monitor Iran Human Rights said at least 45 protesters, including eight children, have been killed by security forces.

BBC Persian has confirmed the deaths and identities of 22 people, while Iranian authorities have reported the deaths of six security personnel.

US flags lowered in Dolly Parton tribute | BBC News

Published

on

Iconic country musician Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, her family announced on her social media.

“Sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” Parton’s nephew Brian Seaver said in a video announcement.

In a seven-decade career, Parton won 10 Grammy awards, sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and wrote in excess of 3,000 songs.

Parton took her writing seriously, and considered herself a songwriter over everything else. “It’s my way of expressing myself,” she said. “It’s my therapy.”

She was also a savvy businesswoman who wasn’t afraid to make tough decisions. Armed with a quick wit and southern charm, she took control of her show business career that spanned more than 60 years.

Russia warns UK will pay for supplying drones to Ukraine | BBC News

Published

on

Russia has warned the UK of “consequences” following confirmation that British-made drones were used in recent strikes on military and industrial targets in Russia.

In a statement, the Russian embassy to the UK accused Britain of “deliberately opting for an escalation of the Ukraine crisis”, adding that “the deeper its involvement in the conflict… the higher the price it will pay”.

It did not elaborate on the type of threat Moscow was considering.

Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Moscow and elsewhere deep inside Russia, particularly targeting oil refineries and logistics sites for its key online retailer Wildberries.

A spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) said they stood “shoulder to shoulder” with Ukraine.
