🥊 CANELO vs KHAN | 📺 #TheThrowback | The Weight Jump

🥇 When Canelo became Middleweight Champion at the tail end of 2015 there was only one opponent fans wanted him in the ring with, ‘GGG’ Gennady Golovkin. He was the boogeyman of the 158Ibs division and had been campaigning at the weight his whole career.

⚖️ Even though the Mexican was now a two-belt holder at Middleweight, he had been fighting catchweights – his last four bouts to be precise – at 155Ibs and felt he needed to grow into his new class before taking on the man from Kazakhstan.

🇬🇧 It’s safe to say though that the boxing world was not expecting – or appreciative – at the announcement that his next contest would be against former Light-Welterweight Champ, Amir ‘King’ Khan.
Often in exciting fights, no-one could argue the man from Bolton was worthy of a defense by any title-holder between 140-147Ibs.

📺 Amir was simply box-office. With lightning fast hands, a leaky defence and anything but a granite chin; his bouts were always one solid blow away from a complete flip of the script. It’s why he was one of a rare breed of Brits to headline in the States, numerous times.

🥊 Even so, his bravery knew no bounds and many were fearful for the prospects of a boxer – who had suffered two defeats by KO – going up two divisions to face a 25 year-old Meixcan who hunts down his opponents like prey.
But audiences are drawn to a potential car-crash and the interest accrued led to the fight being the first major sporting event to be held at the T-Mobile Arena.

🤔 We have weight divisions for a reason, right?
