EU agrees €90bn loan for Ukraine but without using Russian assets | BBC News

Published

on

European Union leaders have struck a deal to give Ukraine a €90bn (£79bn; $105bn) loan after failing to agree on using frozen Russian assets.

The agreement, which leaders said would meet Ukraine’s military and economic needs for the next two years, came after more than a day of talks at a summit in Brussels.

“We committed, we delivered,” EU chief Antonio Costa wrote on X as he announced the deal to provide a loan backed by the bloc’s common budget.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the support “truly strengthens our resilience”, adding that Russian assets should remain “immobilised”.

Meanwhile, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev said the decision not to use frozen Russian assets is a “major blow to EU warmongers” and adds “law and sanity win… for now”.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has said the woman at the centre of the Cornell University rape case was “failed” at “every turn”. New York state prosecutors have reopened an investigation.

The woman filed a civil lawsuit alleging she was drugged and raped at a fraternity house at the university and that Cornell failed to protect her or adequately punish the men involved.

Cornell has said it supported presenting the case to a grand jury, while rejecting claims that it failed to punish those involved. It has also agreed to have the case examined by an independent investigator.

Spain’s prime minister calls snap election after housing protests | BBC News

Published

on

Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sánchez has called a snap election.
The move comes after his series of measures to tackle the housing crisis was defeated in parliament on Friday.

Those measures were drafted after nationwide protests, triggered by the eviction of an 87-year-old from her home for failing to pay a sharp rent increase.

Sánchez has been Spain’s prime minister since 2018 and the country was not due to hold a general election until summer 2027.
