Ezo 1603: Growing Tensions over the Ainu Trade

In this shameless attempt to ride the Ghost of Yotei hype, I attempt to answer the question: what was going on in early seventeenth century Hokkaido? We’ll see how trade between the indigenous Ainu and the Japanese took on an increasingly oppressive character due to the restrictive policies of the ruling samurai family, the Matsumae, and how tensions between the two groups boiled over in a violent conflict known as Shakushain’s War.
