After three successful, but less-than-impressive defenses of his WBC title, Lennox Lewis’ next opponent became Oliver McCall. Coming into his fight with Lewis, McCall sported an unimpressive 24–5 record with a majority of his wins being against unknown journeymen while his five losses had come against heavyweight contenders including Orlin Norris, James “Buster” Douglas and Tony Tucker.
However, after joining promoter Don King’s stable and embarking on a modest five fight win streak, McCall was named the WBC’s number one contender and thus became the mandatory challenger for Lewis’ title.

Lewis paid little attention to McCall, and prior to the fight, entered into negotiations with both the WBA and IBF Michael Moorer and Olympic rival Riddick Bowe to determine who he would face after his planned defeat of McCall. On June 17, it was announced that both Lewis and Bowe’s managers had come to an agreement for the long-awaited Lewis–Bowe championship fight.

The two fighters were scheduled to split a then-record $31 million purse, but Lewis would still have to get past McCall for the bout to happen.

After failing to secure a fight with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, WBC champion Adrien Broner decided to move up two weight classes to welterweight in order to challenge WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi.

On March 10, 2013, the fight was made official for June 22 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The build up to the fight was marred by an excessive amount of trash talk, with the pre fight press conference featuring comments by both fighters.

After defeating Benn in 1990 Eubank would defend his new WBO middleweight belt three times, before relinquishing to contest the vacant WBO super middleweight title against Michael Watson, who after winning eight of eleven rounds fell into a coma after a Eubank uppercut at the end of round 11, before the subsequent referee stoppage twenty seconds into round 12. Benn, who had also moved up to super middleweight, won the WBC super middleweight title in Italy, beating Mauro Galvano. With both men champions in the same weight division, a unification fight and three-year anticipated rematch was arranged by Don King for 9 October 1993. Over 42,000 crammed Old Trafford for this bout. Don King’s contract stipulated that not only would the winner join his stable of fighters, but also the loser.

Unlike the first fight, this time Eubank’s ring walk went off without a hitch, with ITV commentator Reg Gutteridge commenting when Eubank performed his customary vault over the ropes into the ring, “The ego has landed”.

Rumours of a fight between English boxers Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn first surfaced in July 2022. On 10 August, the bout was officially announced to take place on 8 October at The O2 Arena in London at a catchweight of 157 Ibs.

The bout was billed as “born rivals,” a nod to the rivalry between the pair’s fathers in the 1990s. However, on 5 October the event was cancelled after the British Boxing Board of Control prohibited Benn from participating after testing positive for clomifene.

On 24 January 2025, Turki Alalshikh announced on social media that the bout between Eubank Jr. and Benn would be rescheduled for 26 April at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The launch press conference took place on 25 February in Manchester and did no go without drama and controversy. Benn took a swipe at Eubank only taking the fight for money, claiming Eubank owed Brazilian footballer Neymar $5 million.
Words were exchanged as Eubank got an egg from inside his coat and slapped it on the side of Benn’s face. The two teams then had to be separated. Nigel Benn was also near Benn at the face-off and was seen grabbing Eubank by the throat.
Further face-offs between the two were cancelled.

.Eubank weighed in over the middleweight limit on his first attempt at 160.2 lbs, and on his second and final attempt, he recorded 160.05 pounds, exceeding the limit by just 0.05 lbs. Benn weighed in at a comfortable 156.4 pounds. Eubank expressed frustration over the weigh-in procedure, claiming the scales were closed early and that he was denied the opportunity to urinate to shed the small excess weight. He described tactics designed to unsettle him ahead of the fight.
For missing weight, Eubank was fined £375,000 (~$500,000), which was paid to Benn. The morning of the fight, Benn came in at 165 pounds and Eubank, who again, attended the weigh in late, weighed 169.4 pounds.
Eubank criticized Benn’s team for using psychological tactics to disrupt him, while Hearn attributed Eubank’s miss to poor weight management by his team

Both Benn and Eubank fought at middleweight and super middleweight around the same time in 1985–97, and became rivals on both the domestic and world boxing scene. Benn won his first 22 consecutive bouts by knockout, earning the moniker ‘the Dark Destroyer’. Eubank was the cocky, flamboyant upstart who began calling out Benn after his tenth bout. The rivalry grew, with both men swearing that they would knock the other man out.

Benn, having lost to Michael Watson, began to rebuild in America, winning the WBO middleweight title by knocking out Doug DeWitt. He then savaged Iran Barkley within one round in his first defence. Benn then agreed to meet Eubank with his title on the line, which set up the first fight. A rematch was held three years later.

Once Benn had agreed to the first fight with Eubank, his entourage began plotting ways to demoralise Eubank and ‘even things up’. They decided to sabotage his entrance music. As Eubank made his ring walk to the sound of Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the Best’, the record suddenly stopped. Eubank ignored this, and made his way to the ring apron and vaulted to the rope as per usual.
