Secret revealed! A “City of the Dead” made of 6 million remains under Paris. Why does it exist?
Paris, the “City of Light,” is world-renowned for its romance, art, and fashion. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Champs-Élysées… countless people yearn for its romance and splendor. However, beneath Paris’s glitz lies a little-known “kingdom of darkness.” Here, there are no romantic cafes, no dazzling art, only the eternal slumber of six million souls. This is the famous Paris Catacombs. They wind their way through nearly 300 kilometers, reaching depths of 20 meters below the surface. Most astoundingly, their walls are not made of brick or stone, but of the densely packed bones of over six million human remains. In the 18th century, with the surface cemeteries overcrowded and plague rampant, the Parisian city government decided to relocate the millions of remains to abandoned underground quarries. Since then, this area has become a vast “city of the dead,” a silent temple of the soul.
