Manhunt under way after two police officers shot dead in Porepunkah, Australia | BBC News

Published

on

A huge manhunt is under way for a “heavily armed” male suspect after two Australian police officers were shot dead and one was injured at a property in a small rural town in Victoria state.

Police described the situation in Porepunkah, in the Australian Alps, as an “active incident” with hundreds of personnel deployed to find the suspect.

Officers were attacked as 10 of them attended the property to serve an arrest warrant.

Police said the suspect escaped into the bush alone and on foot after the shooting. Officers are still trying to locate the man’s wife and children.

The state police chief said all available resources were being used in the manhunt and urged local people to stay indoors.

US President Trump says Iran shot down US helicopter and vows to respond | BBC News

Published

on

US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to respond to the attack out of “necessity”.

Two crew members of the downed Apache helicopter were rescued by an American sea drone, US Central Command (Centcom) said.

“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack.”

It was not immediately clear what the US response would be, but any military action risks inflaming the shaky ceasefire with Iran once again. There has been no immediate response from Tehran on the US president’s comments.
