Rail expert unpacks deadly train crash in Spain | BBC News
At least 64 people have been killed after a Spanish high-speed train collided with another south of the capital Madrid, officials say.
The updated death toll makes the rail disaster the country’s worst since 2013, when 80 people died after a train derailed in north-western Spain.
Investigations are ongoing but Francisco Badea, a professor of engineering at Nebrija University, says unacceptable failures in the system likely occurred before the deadly crash.
More than 500 passengers were travelling on the trains involved in Wednesday’s collision, the spokesperson for the regional government says.

Is Ukraine being shut out of its own future? | The Global Story
Can Ukraine still rely on America?
More than 80 years after the Yalta conference reshaped post-war Europe, some observers fear a new era of great-power diplomacy could once again shape the continent’s future. Reports of a possible meeting between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping have prompted questions about what role Ukraine would play in any discussion about ending the war.
The speculation comes amid a sharp deterioration in relations between Washington and Kyiv. From disputes over Starlink access to growing concerns about Trump’s outreach to Moscow, Ukrainian officials worry they are losing influence with their most powerful ally.
At the centre of the debate is a simple question: does Trump see Ukraine as an indispensable partner, or an obstacle to broader deals with Russia?
The Global Story’s Tristan Redman speaks to Simon Shuster of The Atlantic about the state of the war, the future of US support and why Kyiv is increasingly worried about being left out of the room.

What next for the war in Iran after Israeli elections? | BBC News
Benjamin Netanyahu and Gadi Eisenkot – the two men hoping to be Israel’s next prime minister – have very different views of the war in Iran. With no clear winner at this stage, Israel’s next steps in the conflict are also uncertain.
Qatar said it has presented a new potential peace plan to Iran, but Tehran says the ideas are unacceptable.
Meanwhile there are fresh reports that the US is preparing to attack Iran after the midterm elections.
And the Houthis in Yemen claim Saudi-backed forces have killed at least 14 people in the north of the country, as the Houthis attack Aden airport in the south-west.

Is AI helping or harming cyber-security amid the PHP hacking attempts | Global News Podcast
Cyber-security experts have used AI tools to uncover a major flaw in the programming language behind many websites, known as PHP. That has led governments, businesses and other organisations around the world scrambling to fix the problem, with many sites going dark. Analysts say hackers have made millions of attempts – using AI – to try to exploit the problem.
We hear from cyber researcher Ryan Austin, who discovered the PHP flaw, and ask our tech correspondent about the power and danger of AI.

07:23 We hear from Arab-Israeli voters – also known as Palestinian citizens of Israel – as Israel prepares for its first general election since the Hamas attacks of 7th October 2023. Polls show that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his main rivals have an easy path to forming a coalition government. That means small Arab-majority parties could hold the balance of power, depending on whom they decide to support.
