How have six months of US President Donald Trump shaken up the global economy? | BBC News

Published

on

Tariffs, trade, tax, spending, energy and immigration are just some of the areas that have seen change thanks to a blitz of new policies from US President Donald Trump, but is there a coherent plan behind this lightning change?

Adam Posen from the Peterson Institute for International Economics explains why the US economy could be heading for more inflation and perhaps even towards recession.

And when it comes to tariffs, why have steel, aluminium and copper been singled out and will it really make any difference to domestic production?

Talking Business also hears from billionaire mining entrepreneur Robert Friedland, of Ivanhoe Mines and Ivanhoe Electric, about why these tariffs are key to America’s economic future.

Is the world giving up on the US dollar? | The Global Story

Published

on

America’s national debt recently hit a new milestone of $40 trillion. It is estimated that interest payments on the national debt are now the second largest expense in the US government budget, trailing only Social Security. How was the US able to borrow so much and for so long? One answer, according Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, is the US dollar’s status as the world’s reserve currency.

In this episode, Rogoff – former Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund – explains how the US dollar came to enjoy this hegemonic status, what being the world’s reserve currency actually means in practice, and why he believes the dollar is now in decline.
