The end of data centres? Apple and Meta’s bet against the cloud | AI Decoded

Published

on

AI Decoded looks at the surprising alliance between Meta and Apple raises one of the biggest questions facing the AI industry. As technology companies invest hundreds of billions into ever-larger data centres, two former Silicon Valley rivals are backing a different vision: powerful AI models that can run locally on advanced desktop computers rather than relying entirely on the cloud.

For years, bigger AI has meant bigger infrastructure. Vast data centres now consume enormous amounts of energy, water and land, while communities around the world are increasingly pushing back against their expansion. But what if there was another way? What if businesses could run powerful AI systems from their own offices, on machines sitting beneath their desks?

Host Marc Cieslak is joined by Ben Hatton, consumer technology specialist and Nate Soares, AI safety researcher and author, for a fascinating discussion on whether Apple’s hardware and Meta’s open-weight AI strategy could signal a major shift in the future of computing.

Nearly 1,000 arrested as demonstrations in France turn violent | BBC News

Published

on

Nearly 1,000 arrests were made as hundreds of thousands people took part in another day of protests across France.

After a day of largely peaceful demonstrations, clashes occurred late on Saturday with police firing tear gas and water cannons to disperse protestors in a number of cities including Paris.

The interior ministry said an estimated 410,000 people protested on Saturday, while the unions put the number at about 800,000.

Hundreds of people have been jailed for vandalism, arson and looting after the protests over the cost of living and poor school conditions descended into chaos.

Trump says Iran will ‘never have a nuclear weapon’, as he attends G7 summit | BBC News

Published

US President Donald Trump has said Iran will “never have a nuclear weapon” in his preliminary deal to end the war.

Speaking at the G7 summit, Trump also said that without him “there would be no Israel” and criticised Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Fighting between Hezbollah and Israel has continued, and Iran has said Israeli troops must withdraw from Lebanon.

Netanyahu said his troops will not be withdrawing and the framework deal was reached between Iran and the US, not Israel.
