Jimmy Lai denies foreign collusion in landmark trial in Hong Kong | BBC News
Jimmy Lai, one of Hong Kong’s most influential pro-democracy figures, has testified in court for the first time in a national security trial that may see him sentenced to life in jail.
The 76-year-old founder of the now-defunct Hong Kong tabloid Apple Daily has been accused of colluding with foreign forces.
But Lai told the court on Wednesday that he had “never” used his foreign contacts, which include ex-US VP Mike Pence and former Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen, to influence foreign policy on Hong Kong.
Lai is already serving prison sentences for a range of offences for his alleged role in pro-democracy protests in 2019, which led to China imposing a sweeping national security law (NSL) in the city.

Face masks to be compulsory on public transport in England with fines for non-compliance – BBC News
From June 15th face coverings will be compulsory, for anyone using public transport in England.
People without one won’t be allowed to travel and failing to wear one on a journey could lead to a fine. The government says people should start wearing them now, with the rules enforced from the middle of June
Dozens of other countries already have rules in place on the wearing of face masks and coverings in public places.

The UK is changing its vaccination strategy, with a plan to prioritise giving millions of people a first dose of vaccine, in the latest effort to contain the pandemic.
It came as the daily death toll rose to more than 900 people with the number of new Covid cases at record levels.
The UK medicines regulator has approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine and the UK has already placed an order for 100 million doses.

The oldest known sentence in the ancient language of Canaanites has been decoded by at team of Israeli archaeologists.
The inscription was discovered on an ivory head-lice comb, unearthed at Tel Lachish, an ancient city in the Biblical Kingdom of Judah.
Experts translated the comb to read: “May this tusk root out the lice of the hair and the beard.”
The landmark discovery provides evidence for the use of the alphabet 3,700 years ago.
