The US has carried out a missile strike against a Syrian air base in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town. Fifty-nine Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from two US Navy ships in the Mediterranean. At least six people are reported to have been killed. It is the first direct US military action against forces commanded by Syria’s president.

Today, an almighty bust up is happening in the world of football between Fifa and Uefa.

FIFA, who run the World cup, whose President Gianni Infantino recently announced a proposal to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors.

UEFA, the governing body of European football, responded by calling an emergency meeting and the confederation unanimously voted in favour of a boycott should these plans go ahead.

President Trump has announced that he is nominating the conservative federal judge Amy Coney Barrett to serve on the US Supreme Court.

The nomination will trigger a bitter political battle in Congress as Republicans try to have Judge Barrett confirmed by the Senate, before the Presidential and Congressional elections in November.

The US Supreme Court’s nine justices serve for life and their rulings can shape public policy long after the President who nominated them has left office.

Judge Barrett is described as a “devout Catholic” who believes that “life begins at conception”. That’s made her a favourite among religious conservatives in America who hope to overturn the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling which legalised abortion across the United States.

She’s been nominated to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of the liberal justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who became famous for her defence of abortion and women’s rights.

For 40 years, the identity of a tiny seaweed living in a secret underwater world has been a mystery. But a team of scientific divers exploring the waters off south Cornwall have made a breakthrough.

They discovered a seaweed that is now known to be an entirely new species to science. The discovery is so new, it doesn’t have a common name yet, so you are being invited to make suggestions.

Now scientifically documented for the first time globally, and shared exclusively with the BBC, and has joined the Natural History Museum’s official collection. We’ve been to under-explored and well-known marine habitats in Cornwall to find out more.
