Boris Johnson makes first speech as new PM – BBC News

Published

on

Boris Johnson has said “his job is to serve the people” as he becomes the UK’s new prime minister.
Speaking outside Downing Street after accepting The Queen’s invitation to form a government, he said he wanted to “change the country for the better”.
He said the UK would leave the EU on 31 October “no ifs, no buts”, adding: “The buck stops with me.”
Mr Johnson took over after Theresa May handed in her resignation to the Queen a short time ago.
The new PM will then begin putting together his cabinet – a number of Mrs May’s senior ministers have already resigned, having said they could not serve under him.
As she relinquished power after three years, Mrs May said being prime minister had been “the greatest honour” and wished her successor well.

Donald Trump has said the US plans fresh talks with Iran from Monday, has and threatened to hit infrastructure if a deal is not agreed.

Shots fired at vessels in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday are a violation of the ceasefire agreement, the US president said, while Iran has also accused the US of breaching the truce agreement with its naval blockade.

Ships have again come to a standstill around the strait after Iran resumed its blockade yesterday.

Man who learnt to read at 18 becomes Cambridge University’s youngest ever black professor – BBC News

Published

on

A man who could not read or write until he was 18 is to become the youngest ever black person to become a professor at Cambridge.

Jason Arday, from south-west London, was diagnosed with autism and global development delay in his early years, and unable to speak until he was 11 years old.

Now the 37-year-old is set to become professor of sociology of education at the university.

Official figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency show how, in 2021, just 155 of more than 23,000 university professors in the UK were black.

Prof Arday said he has a particular interest in improving the representation of ethnic minorities in higher education.

“If we want to make education more inclusive, the best tools we have are solidarity, understanding and love,” he said.
