Radium water that a millionaire drank until his jaw fell apart, a “safer” cigarette filter made of blue asbestos, a toy lab with real uranium ore, a soda that once had lithium in it, and a husband ready to spank his wife over a can of coffee. Every one of these ads really ran, in the biggest magazines and on national TV. These are the vintage ads that would get banned today: Camel’s “More Doctors Smoke Camels”, Lucky Strike, Kent’s Micronite filter, Marlboro babies, Santa Claus and Ronald Reagan selling Chesterfields, The Flintstones and Winston, Joe Camel, Cocaine Toothache Drops, Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup, Bayer Heroin, Vin Mariani and early Coca-Cola, Radithor and Eben Byers, Tho-Radia, shoe-store X-ray machines, Dexamyl, Obetrol, thalidomide and Frances Kelsey, DDT, Dutch Boy lead paint, asbestos snow, the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab, lawn darts, mail-order guns, Chase & Sanborn, Lysol, 7 Up, Pabst, “Guinness is good for you”, and the mascots that finally disappeared, from the Frito Bandito to Aunt Jemima.
