Six killed in ‘most massive’ Russian air attack, Ukraine says | BBC News

on

Russia has launched one of its biggest air attacks on Ukraine of the war so far, the head of the Ukrainian air force has said.

At least six people were killed and dozens wounded as missiles and drones were fired into more than half of Ukraine’s regions on Monday.

Power infrastructure was hit, causing widespread blackouts, as the entire country was put under air raid alert and told to take shelter.

Russia confirmed it had launched attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure – one of its long-term tactics – and said all its targets were hit.

According to Mykola Oleshchuk, the commander of Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched 127 missiles and 109 attack drones.

The United States of America marked its 250th birthday with fireworks, flyovers, some intense weather across the country, much of which has simmered under an unforgiving heat wave for days.

“The American dream is back,” US President Donald Trump told a cheering crowd at a delayed rally on the National Mall in Washington before the reputed largest fireworks display ever in the US lit up the night.

Explosions injure 18 in Damascus during Emmanuel Macron’s visit | BBC News

Published

on

Eighteen people have been injured after explosive devices went off in central Damascus, Syrian media says, reportedly near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron had been staying.

State news agency Sana said two devices had been detected by security forces, which exploded as specialised units began the process to defuse them.

One device was placed inside a parked vehicle, while the other was concealed in a bin, the agency said.

Macron has been in the capital for talks with his Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa at the presidential palace. His officials said he was safe and did not hear the explosions.
