Italy’s PM says fascism is ‘consigned to history’ – not everyone is so sure | BBC News
It’s more than a century since Italy’s fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, and his totalitarian regime, swept to power.
His rule was marked by brutal repression – and when Mussolini allied with Hitler’s Germany, thousands were sent to their deaths during the Holocaust.
Italy’s current government is led by the Brothers of Italy party, which has roots in post-war fascism.
Its leader, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, says her movement has completely changed.
But some fear she and her party have not moved far enough away from their political origins – and that what was once considered the extreme is becoming mainstream.

The US launched a fresh wave of strikes in response to Iranian forces hitting a ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
In response to the American strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the waterway was closed until further notice and launched attacks on US bases and allies in the region.
The IRGC said it had hit a US base in Jordan, while the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain all responded to missiles and drones from Iran.
It comes after incidents earlier this week in which three commercial tankers were attacked, prompting an exchange of strikes between the US and Iran.

We ask the BBC’s business editor Simon Jack what President Donald Trump’s new strategy in the Strait of Hormuz means for the global economy – and what cards Iran has left to play as it threatens to block the Bab el-Mandeb strait at the mouth of the Red Sea.
President Trump has tried to exert more control over the Strait of Hormuz as the US-Iran ceasefire crumbles.
This week, Trump announced a 20% toll for all ships traversing the strait. But he quickly changed tack after receiving calls from regional leaders, saying he would instead make “massive” trade and investment deals with Gulf states – ostensibly in exchange for safe passage.
“I don’t like the concept of a fee,” he later told reporters. “But at the same time, it’s not fair that we’re protecting this Strait for the entire world.”
Trump has also claimed that “oil is flowing like never before, thanks to the awesome power of the United States military,” although analysts say the traffic of oil and gas tankers through the Strait of Hormuz is still markedly lower than before the US-Israel war with Iran
Some have warned that global oil reserves could be running low.
And the White House is under increasing pressure to stabilise the US economy, and lower gas prices, before midterm elections in November.

Andy Burnham pledged to “bring back hope” to Britain, as he began his tenure as prime minister by appointing Labour stalwart John Healey as chancellor.
In his first speech to the nation in Downing Street, Burnham said he wanted to bring forward the “biggest changes in the last 40 years” to British politics.
He outlined his intention to unveil a 10-year “new plan for Britain” later this year, explaining this would lay out a path to where he believes “we all want Britain to be”.
