Why Israeli Gen Z voters are drawn to the far right | BBC News

Published

on

Israel’s election is taking place Tuesday, to elect a new government, in the first election since the 7 October Hamas attacks three years ago.

More than half a million first-time voters are among those due to cast their ballots.

The vote is seen by many voters as an existential decision on the country’s future identity and security.

Surveys suggest that around three quarters of new voters see themselves as “right or centre right” – and that Israel’s far-right parties are among those benefitting.

The ’s Middle East Correspondent Lucy Williamson has been speaking with Gen Z voters in Israel.

The Canadian province of Alberta has voted to reject a plan to hold a binding referendum on independence. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Albertans and all Canadians would move forward together with renewed purpose and high ambition.

Alberta is at the heart of Canada’s oil and gas industry. Separatist campaigners have argued that Alberta could be richer if it were an independent country. This comes amid a trade war with President Donald Trump – who has mused about Canada becoming the 51st US state.
