At least 93 people were killed when gunmen attacked a packed concert venue on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia has said.

Four suspects are among 11 detained, Russia’s security chief told President Putin.

More than 140 others were wounded at the Crocus City Hall, according to the FSB Federal Security Service.

A large fire engulfed the roof of the complex and dramatic video shows panicked concertgoers taking cover as shots and explosions rung out.

Russia blamed for failed drone attack on airport in Germany | BBC News

Published

The heads of Nato and the European Commission have warned that Russia is growing increasingly reckless and vowed to respond to a “new normal”.

“Leipzig marks a new escalation on European Union soil directly attributed to Russia,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a day after Germany blamed Russia for a failed drone attack last month on Leipzig airport.

“We have to step up and that means being ready to respond to Russia’s recklessness faster and better,” von der Leyen said. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said the whole alliance, which includes the US, stood “in full solidarity with Germany”.

Russia has rejected German accusations that a drone carrying explosives deliberately targeted a Ukrainian cargo plane on 4 August.

JD Vance ‘sceptical’ that US was behind deadly Iran wedding strike | BBC News

Published

The US Vice President says authorities are investigating a deadly strike on a wedding in southern Iran, but that he is ‘sceptical’ about claims America was involved.

It comes as the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has vowed to ‘avenge’ those killed in the blast at the celebrations in Kuhestak.

Elsewhere there are questions about Pete Hegseth’s leadership of the Pentagon as a series of military leaders are removed or forced out.

And the price of oil rises once again, as the US and Iran return to trading strikes.

‘Nepal is my home – now I’m reporting on its worst disaster’ | The Global Story

Published

on

As the world watches the aftermath of devastating floods in Nepal, journalist Anup Kaphle has been asking a difficult question: When does coverage of a natural disaster cross from rightful global concern into spectacle?

Kaphle is the group editorial director of Kantipur Media Group, Nepal’s largest media organisation. He’s also a native of Nepal. After more than two decades working for American newsrooms, he returned to his home country with a mission to help tell Nepal’s story for the people who live there. Now, he finds himself confronting one of the greatest challenges of his career: helping Nepalis understand the full scale of the flooding and its impact on their lives, at a moment when international attention is focused on the most dramatic accounts.

Asma Khalid, co-host of The Global Story, speaks with Kaphle about the ongoing humanitarian efforts, the potential long-term impact of the disaster on Nepalis, and why he worries that the international community will soon turn its attention away from Nepal.
