The deadly battles that tipped Myanmar into civil war – BBC News

Published

on

Myanmar is seeing increasingly deadly battles between its military and organised groups of armed civilians.

Many of those fighting the military are young people who started as protesters against the junta that seized power a year ago. They have now turned into a guerrilla army.

The intensity and extent of the violence – and the coordination of the opposition attacks – mean that the conflict has transitioned from an uprising to civil war.

Mystery of US spy chief’s secret visit to Moscow | BBC News

Published

on

The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency has travelled to Moscow for secret, unnannounced talks, according to multiple sources in the United States

John Ratcliffe is understood to have arrived in the Russian capital. Neither Washington or Moscow have confirmed the nature of the visit or who he was due to meet.

In-person talks between high-level American and Russian officials are rare.

Flight tracking data confirmed a large US military aircraft travelled to Russia from the US via Latvia. Footage posted on social media showed the C-17 transport plane approaching Moscow’s Vnukovo international airport.

It departed Riga airport at 05:50 GMT and appeared to have landed in the Russian capital at around 07:04 GMT, according to data from FlightRadar24. It returned to Riga shortly before 17:00 GMT.

Footage on social media also purported to show a diplomatic motorcade travelling through Moscow.

Ahead of the trip, the US told Ukraine that a senior delegation would be travelling to Moscow and asked Kyiv to suspend strikes until they had left, a senior Ukrainian official said.

Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Tom Bateman in Washington.
