The battle for the Amazon’s future – BBC News

Published

on

One of the world’s greatest defences against climate change – the Amazon rainforest – is under growing attack from deforestation.

But many of those working and making a living in it – including those cutting down its trees – say they depend on the forest and its resources for their own survival.

On Tuesday at the COP26 climate summit, more than 100 countries, covering about 85% of the world’s rainforests, are due to sign a pledge promising to stop deforestation by 2030.

Brazil is among the signatories, although President Jair Bolsonaro is not attending the summit and deforestation has surged under his leadership.

BBC international correspondent Orla Guerin visited Brazil’s Rondônia state and met four people with differing views: a logger, an environmental policeman, a cattle rancher and an environmental activist.

Detective raped by colleague says Met handling of case ‘like being raped again’ | BBC News

Published

on

A Metropolitan Police detective who was raped by a fellow officer has told the BBC that Scotland Yard’s handling of her case was “like being raped all over again”.

Linda Williams, who has waived her right to anonymity for this exclusive interview, was attacked in 2004 by David Carrick, one of the UK’s most notorious sex offenders who was jailed three years ago for attacking Linda and other women. But she says the Met’s conduct during a subsequent civil case left her feeling suicidal.

In an unprecedented move for a serving officer, she is calling for the Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, to resign, and says she does not trust her own force to handle cases like hers.

The Met has paid tribute to her and says it tried to reduce her distress and re-traumatisation.

Meghan says allegations against father ‘disturbing’ and hopes justice ‘fully served’ | BBC News

Published

on

The Duchess of Sussex has said she was informed about “disturbing allegations” about her estranged father in 2018.

In a statement, Meghan said a letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle was sent to the Metropolitan Police that year and subsequently shared with her.

Her comments come after reports that images of child sexual abuse allegedly belonging to her father had been found at his former home in the Philippines.

Thomas Markle, who is 82 and based in the US, denies possessing any such images.

She described the allegations as “more sickening than one could ever imagine” and said her “sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children”.

‘One of their own’: Women targeted by serving police officers | BBC News

Published

on

Two women who were preyed upon by serving police officers they trusted have described their ordeals and why they have decided to speak out.

Both women have waived their right to anonymity to tell their harrowing stories as part of a BBC North West investigation which uncovered more than 1,200 domestic abuse allegations in three years against police officers and special constables across England and Wales.

Professional standards investigations were opened into allegations including rape, sexual assault, grievous bodily harm, stalking and serious violence.

Most of the cases were discontinued, subjected to no further action or dropped because of a lack of evidence or victims withdrawing their complaints.
