EU leaders agree €50bn support package for Ukraine | BBC News

Published

on

All 27 EU leaders have agreed a €50bn aid package for Ukraine after Hungary had previously blocked the deal.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the new funding, saying it would strengthen the country’s economic and financial stability.

There had been fears Hungary’s PM would again block the package as he did at a European summit last December.

The money will help to pay pensions and salaries and other costs over the next four years, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says will strengthen the country’s economic and financial stability.

Thursday’s decision comes as US military aid for Ukraine is being held up by Congress.

The United Nations General Assembly is to vote later today on a special resolution about the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

The motion calls for Russia to withdraw from all Ukrainian territory, and for hostilities to end.

Major powers like India and South Africa have abstained on similar votes previously, while Russia’s allies oppose it.

The vote will take place at the UN General Assembly, and has no legal standing, but is considered to be an important measure of international opinion.

Israel supports US-Iran ceasefire but says it ‘does not include Lebanon’ | BBC News

Published

on

Israel has said it supports suspending strikes on Iran, but added the two-week ceasefire “does not include Lebanon”.

A statement from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel “supports President Trump’s decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region”.

It then said: “The two-weeks ceasefire does not include Lebanon”.

Iran and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who helped negotiate the ceasefire, both have said the deal covers Lebanon, where Israel has been fighting the Iranian proxy Hezbollah.

US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, if shipping is allowed to move through the Strait of Hormuz.
