Vladimir Putin watches first Russian nuclear drill since Ukraine invasion – BBC News

Published

on

Vladimir Putin has overseen annual exercises by Russia’s nuclear forces.

Ballistic and cruise missiles were launched from the Arctic to Russia’s Far East, the Kremlin said.

The US was told about the drill under the terms of the New Start arms treaty.

The launches took place as Russia made unsubstantiated claims that Ukraine was plotting to use a “dirty bomb” – an explosive device mixed with radioactive material.

What most people don’t know about nukes is that they are incredibly difficult to detonate. They need perfect engineering and pyrotechnics chemicals to perfectly implode a plutonium pit using a symmetrical shockwave to achieve nuclear supercritical mass and fission. Any asymmetry in the shockwave cause an imbalance that just vaporizes or fizzles the plutonium, making the nuclear weapon “broken” and unable to work.

Another thing is that these pyrotechnics need maintenance to ensure their crystal structure is uniform and electronics without corrosion. Maintaining this under tight security is incredibly expensive, and Russia doesn’t have the cash to do that across its 5000+ warheads. It’s fairly safe to say that even if Putin tries to launch any nukes, most of them if not all of them aren’t gonna work.

Meet the 19-metre octopus that prowled the ancient seas | BBC News

Published

on

Giant octopuses may have ruled the ancient oceans 100 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, according to new research.

Some of the earliest octopuses are believed to have been powerful predators equipped with strong arms for grabbing prey and beak-like jaws for munching on the shells and bones of other animals.

A new study, by scientists from Hokkaido University in Japan, of some remarkably well preserved jaws suggest they reached up to 19m (62ft), potentially making them the largest invertebrates ever known to scientists.

For decades, palaeontologists believed that the largest ocean predators were vertebrates with backbones such as fish and reptiles while invertebrates like octopuses and squid played supporting roles.
