Vladimir Putin watches first Russian nuclear drill since Ukraine invasion – BBC News

Published

on

Vladimir Putin has overseen annual exercises by Russia’s nuclear forces.

Ballistic and cruise missiles were launched from the Arctic to Russia’s Far East, the Kremlin said.

The US was told about the drill under the terms of the New Start arms treaty.

The launches took place as Russia made unsubstantiated claims that Ukraine was plotting to use a “dirty bomb” – an explosive device mixed with radioactive material.

What most people don’t know about nukes is that they are incredibly difficult to detonate. They need perfect engineering and pyrotechnics chemicals to perfectly implode a plutonium pit using a symmetrical shockwave to achieve nuclear supercritical mass and fission. Any asymmetry in the shockwave cause an imbalance that just vaporizes or fizzles the plutonium, making the nuclear weapon “broken” and unable to work.

Another thing is that these pyrotechnics need maintenance to ensure their crystal structure is uniform and electronics without corrosion. Maintaining this under tight security is incredibly expensive, and Russia doesn’t have the cash to do that across its 5000+ warheads. It’s fairly safe to say that even if Putin tries to launch any nukes, most of them if not all of them aren’t gonna work.

Thousands of job cuts expected at Jaguar Land Rover | BBC News

Published

on

Thousands of job cuts are expected at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a year after a cyber attack brought car production to a halt for more than a month.

The company did not confirm the numbers but the Times reported as many as 4,000 jobs may be lost due to the impact of tariffs and a drop in sales.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that when he meets the bosses of JLR and the Unite union to discuss the impact of the job losses early next week, they would focus on ways to “mitigate” the cuts.

JLR employs around 30,000 people in its UK operations and said in July that fewer than 300 people would leave the firm under cost savings plans announced at the time.

Why nobody is defending Milo Yiannopoulos | Top Comment Podcast

Published

on

It’s the latest example of an influencer’s digital persona disintegrating before our eyes. For several years, Angel Victoria Murdock has been portraying a life of self-made success, from real estate deals to a watchalong student experience at Duke University.

She curated hundreds of thousands of followers and even appeared on reality show Temptation Island – only, the majority of her online life appears to have been fabricated.

After being outed by real graduates of the programme she claimed to attend, Murdock’s profile has gone dark. On this episode, we examine her case, and the long line of predecessors who have leveraged a fake identity on social media.

Also this week, as long-time internet provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos cries foul over his deportation from the US, Matt and Marianna consider what his downfall tells us about the state of social media.

A man who forged a career from controversy, they discuss why the splintered conservative community may have united in abandoning him, and how cancel culture is evolving.
